Expect Fireworks When Chargers Host Cowboys

Dak Prescott's Cowboys are underdogs in the Dallas vs Los Angeles odds for Week 2.

Dallas (0-1 SU, 1-0 ATS) has gone OVER the total in five straight as an underdog and six of its last eight overall. Another high-scoring affair is anticipated when the Cowboys visit the Chargers (1-0, 1-0), who have won and covered their last five games.

Opening Odds Analysis

Early betting action was one-way traffic on the OVER as the total had shot all the way up to 55 by the time of writing. The Chargers were also bet up to 3-point chalk despite the fact that Dallas has three extra days to prepare after opening the season last Thursday in Tampa Bay.

Dallas News & Notes

Despite their 31-29 loss to the Bucs, Cowboys fans had to be encouraged by Dak Prescott’s performance in the season opener. Dak threw for 403 yards and three touchdowns, showing no signs of the devastating ankle injury that ended his season early last year. Dallas aired it out a whopping 58 times and resembled the offense that had more than 2,000 passing yards through its first five games in 2020.

Prescott will be without one of his top targets this week, however, as Michael Gallup is expected to miss at least three weeks with a left calf strain suffered against Tampa Bay. That could make Amari Cooper and CeeDee Lamb even more valuable in fantasy lineups, although Cedrick Wilson could also have some value as Dallas’ third receiver.

Dallas may also be a bit thin on both the offensive and defensive lines, even with All-Pro guard Zack Martin returning from the COVID-19 reserve list. Right tackle La’el Collins will serve the first game of a five-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, while defensive end Randy Gregory was placed on the COVID list and needs two negative tests this week to be cleared to face the Chargers.

Los Angeles News & Notes

A lot looked different about the Chargers last week in head coach Brandon Staley’s debut. Not only did they win a tight game — out of character for a squad that was 7-16 SU in one-score games the last two years under Anthony Lynn —  but they also spread the ball around more on offense. Justin Herbert targeted nine different receivers in the 20-16 win over Washington, and five players had at least three catches.

Surprisingly, one of the players who went without a target was running back Austin Ekeler, who was a huge part of LA’s passing game last year. Receiver Mike Williams now appears to be Herbert’s favorite weapon after catching a career-high eight balls on 12 targets, making him a great fantasy candidate if you’re in a points-per-reception league.

Last week’s win built on the momentum LA had at the end of 2020, when the Chargers closed with a 4-0 SU and ATS surge. However, they’ve struggled to deliver for their backers recently when laying points at home, going 3-9-1 ATS in their last 13 as home favorites.

Staff Betting Pick: OVER 55

Dallas moved the ball with ease against Tampa Bay and should be able to do it again vs the Chargers, while Herbert is in for a field day against the leaky Cowboys secondary. Don’t be surprised if we see both teams score into the 30s.
