  • The Tennessee Titans (7-8 SU, 8-6-1 ATS) are fighting for their playoff lives and will attempt to end a five-game losing streak against the Dallas Cowboys (11-4, 9-6) as large home underdogs in the Week 17 Thursday Night Football matchup.

    The Titans are coming off a devastating 19-14 loss to the last-place Houston Texans as 3-point home favorites in a key AFC South matchup last week, dropping them into a first-place tie with the Jacksonville Jaguars atop the division.

    Who knew Tennessee quarterback Ryan Tannehill was worth so much to the betting line? The Titans looked terrible without him last Saturday, and the Cowboys were up as high as 10-point road favorites as of Monday, up significantly from the opener of -3. The drop-off from Tannehill to rookie Malik Willis even proved to be too much to overcome against the lowly Texans as Willis completed 14 of 23 passes for only 99 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. The offensive fallout has also impacted the total, which has fallen as low as 42 in early betting action and could close even lower by kickoff.

    Dallas Faces Potential Letdown Off Big Win Over Philadelphia

    The Cowboys still have an outside shot at winning the NFC East – and finishing as the top seed in the conference – but they need to get some help in the last two weeks to make that happen. They continue to look up at Philadelphia in the standings despite beating the Eagles 40-34 last week as 4-point home favorites, and the Minnesota Vikings are ahead of them in the race for the NFC’s No. 1 seed as well.

    Right now, they are set up to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild-card round of the playoffs, and that might be the most beneficial situation for them outside of earning a bye with the top seed. In other words, their effort may not be the same here knowing that is the case.

    Tennessee Needs to Right Ship Quickly to Win Division

    After upsetting the Green Bay Packers 27-17 as 3-point road underdogs in the Week 11 Monday Night Football game, it looked like the Titans would run away with the AFC South title with a 7-3 record at the time. But since then, they saw their offensive coordinator Todd Downing get arrested for a DUI immediately following that victory and then they fired GM Jon Robinson after getting blown out 35-10 by the Eagles as 4.5-point road underdogs two weeks later.

    Tannehill played hurt with an ankle injury during that stretch too and did everything he could to stay on the field before eventually opting to have what is expected to be season-ending surgery. Willis is getting his chance to show what he can do, but he obviously still has a long way to go to become a legit starter. 

    Cowboys: Keys to Win

    If Dallas wants to win this game, avoiding mistakes in the passing game is the best bet. The Cowboys do not need to take big risks to win this one, and quarterback Dak Prescott must do a better job protecting the football. Prescott has thrown eight interceptions in the past five games, and Dallas has been fortunate to win four of them. 

    Titans: Keys to Win

    Tennessee is a one-trick pony offensively sans Tannehill, as running the ball is the team’s only real shot to win outside of the defense turning in a monster effort. The Titans have the NFL’s best true running back in Derrick Henry and should have fed him the ball more last week instead of depending on Willis to make plays. Willis does have the ability to bust some good runs, though, and he must take off more to keep the Cowboys on their toes.
