Who’s Going to Start More Games for the Giants in 2019: Manning or Jones?

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones (8) amd New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning (10) prior to the National Football League pre-season football game between the New York Giants and the New York Jets on August 8, 2019 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.

The New York Giants shocked the football world by selecting Duke quarterback Daniel Jones with the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, and while the franchise has deemed Jones the eventual successor to longtime starter Eli Manning, many fans of Big Blue want to see the young gun take the field right out of the gate.

Jones had a sparkling debut in Week 1 of the preseason, going 5-for-5 for 67 yards and a touchdown in his first action under center as a pro. It’s a small sample size, but Jones’ play has already made critics think he deserves a shot to immediately supplant Manning as the starting QB.

New York’s decision to select Jones at No. 6 was a puzzling one at the time, especially since it owned the No. 17 pick and could’ve likely selected Jones then. Online sportsbook BetOnline has released odds on which signal-caller will start more games in 2019, with Manning as the -150 favorite and Jones as the +110 underdog.

Giants Keep Insisting it’s Eli’s Job

This is the Giants we’re talking about, though, so don’t be surprised if Jones barely sees the field at all this year. On Tuesday, Giants owner John Mara backed up his two-time Super Bowl winner by stating “I hope Eli has a great year and Daniel never sees the field. That would be an ideal world. We would like to see that.” At -150, Manning seems like a lock to start more games than Jones to me, whether Manning deserves it or not.

The Giants are clearly not ready to move on from Manning at any point in the near future, and the possibility of a contract extension for the 38-year-old after this season is a realistic possibility. After all, shortly after general manager Dave Gettleman picked Jones, he told reporters he envisioned a potential Brett Favre/Aaron Rodgers situation happening for his club, with Jones sitting multiple years to learn from Manning.
