Chiefs Begin Title Defense Against Texans

The last time the Kansas City Chiefs met the Houston Texans, they rallied back from a 24-point deficit en route to winning the Super Bowl. The Chiefs meet the Texans again to open the 2020 NFL season as nearly double-digit favorites on Thursday Night Football.

Sportsbook Odds Analysis

Houston has gotten a little support from the public leading up to the NFL season opener, dropping the line down slightly from the opener of +10. The total also seems to be on the move, down to 54 at some sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark, with bettors taking the underdog and UNDER as two bigger-than-average numbers on the side and total.

Houston News & Notes

The memories of last year’s disappointing 51-31 playoff loss will definitely be on the minds of all the players and coaches who were at Arrowhead on January 12. An early 24-0 lead looked like a surefire cover at the very least for the Texans, who closed as 10-point underdogs, before everything fell apart.

That said, this is about as big a revenge spot as you can imagine for a Houston team that made some key changes in the offseason. Gone is All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who was dealt to the Arizona Cardinals for running back David Johnson and draft picks.

Houston quarterback Deshaun Watson figures to miss Hopkins, but Johnson could surprise and give the team a much-needed dual-threat back as long as he can stay healthy. That is what the Texans will need here.

Chiefs News & Notes

What more can you say about the Chiefs heading into their season opener, as star quarterback Patrick Mahomes is set to embark on another MVP run and potentially back-to-back Super Bowl titles. That pressure would seem to be enormous for most young players, but Mahomes has the talent and moxie to pull it off as long as he can stay on the field.

Like Houston, Kansas City added a player who can carry and catch the ball in drafting former LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who won the national championship alongside No. 1 overall pick Joe Burrow in January. Edwards-Helaire should earn a lot of playing time right away considering Damien Williams has opted out for the season.

The key early on for the Chiefs is whether their defense can play as it did at the end of the season – a tough task without preseason games.

Betting Pick: OVER 54.5

You can’t count on the defenses coming to play right away to start the season, as neither team will have gotten a chance to compete against others due to the cancellation of the preseason. Both Houston and Kansas City can put up points, with the last meeting backing up that point as well. Look for a high-scoring game to open the 2020 campaign.
