Opening Odds Analysis

Early action on this game has come in on the Jaguars, who opened as 11-point underdogs but are now going off as 9-point road underdogs in Tennessee. The total has also moved slightly down from its opener at 42.5 points to its current line at 42 points. The Titans were 4.5-point favorites at home against Jacksonville last year when they won 42-20.

Jacksonville News & Notes

The Jaguars came into the 2020 season with the longest odds on the board to win the Super Bowl at 300-1. One win doesn’t suddenly make the Jaguars a legitimate contender, but Jacksonville looked surprisingly good on both sides of the ball in a 27-20 upset win over the Indianapolis Colts as a 7-point underdog.

Gardner Minshew II finished the day 19-for-20 with 173 passing yards and three touchdown passes while the Jaguars defense earned two interceptions on Philip Rivers and held the Colts to just 88 rushing yards.

Minshew played so well as a rookie last season (3,271 passing yards, 21 touchdown passes, only six interceptions) that the Jaguars felt comfortable trading Nick Foles away and handing the starting reins over to him this season. The former sixth-round pick didn’t make that decision look foolish in the team’s 2020 debut.

Tennessee News & Notes

Mike Vrabel has made it no secret that his game plan will usually be to hand the ball off to star running back Derrick Henry early and often. Henry set career highs last year in carries with 303, rushing yards with 1,540 and rushing touchdowns with 16. He picked up where he left off in Tennessee’s 16-14 win over the Denver Broncos on Monday night, carrying the ball 31 times for 116 yards.

Three missed field goals by Stephen Gostkowski made Monday’s game a lot closer on the scoreboard than it should have been. The Titans controlled the tempo for most of the game and should still feel plenty confident heading into this week’s matchup against the Jaguars. Tennessee went 4-4 SU and ATS at home last season.

Betting Pick: Tennessee -9

This spread looks high at first glance given that the Titans just squeaked by the Broncos and the Jaguars looked sharp in beating the Colts last week. But it’s important not to overreact to one week; the Titans are significantly stronger than the Jaguars and should show it with a convincing win on Sunday.
