Kansas City News & Notes
Fresh off their first loss of 2020 to the Las Vegas Raiders, the Chiefs decided to turn to the ground game on Monday night in a 26-17 win over the Buffalo Bills. Patrick Mahomes threw only 26 passes, going 21-for-26 with two touchdowns and no interceptions. But the real star of the game was rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who rushed for 161 yards on 26 carries in a dominant performance.
Edwards-Helaire will be joined in the backfield this week by Le’Veon Bell, who is set to make his Chiefs debut after signing a one-year contract to join the defending champions last week.
Bell was one of the NFL’s most dominant running backs with the Pittsburgh Steelers before struggling to get much going in Adam Gase’s offense over the last season and a half with the New York Jets. Should Bell return to his old form under Andy Reid, the Chiefs’ embarrassment of riches on offense would only grow stronger.
Denver News & Notes
Drew Lock did not play well in his return from injury on Sunday against the New England Patriots, finishing 10-for-24 with 189 passing yards, two interceptions and no touchdowns. But thanks to an outstanding effort on defense, the Broncos still came away with an 18-12 victory in New England as a 7-point underdog. Denver improved to 2-3 SU and 4-1 ATS on the season with the upset win.
Melvin Gordon is listed as questionable this week after missing last Sunday with strep throat, but he is expected to return against the Chiefs. Phillip Lindsay racked up 101 rushing yards on 23 carries in Gordon’s absence against the Patriots.
Kansas City ranks 30th in the NFL in rushing defense, allowing 145.3 rushing yards per game, which could lead to a big day for Denver’s running back tandem on Sunday.
Betting Pick: UNDER 47 points
Denver’s running game should be able to eat clock and keep Kansas City’s offense off the field as much as possible. Kansas City should eventually pull away to earn the win, but the UNDER feels like a safer play than trying to figure out whether the Chiefs cover this large spread in victory.
