Sportsbook Odds Analysis

The Chiefs opened as 3-point road favorites in this AFC West matchup and have since been bet down slightly to Kansas City -2.5. Heavy action on the UNDER has pushed the line down from its opener at 53.5 points to its current number at 51.5 points. The OVER is 9-4 in Las Vegas’s last 13 games.

Kansas City News & Notes

The Chiefs did not have the high-octane offense we are used to seeing from them last Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. Patrick Mahomes had only 166 passing yards and one passing touchdown and the offense produced only 13 points. But with an outstanding defensive effort and a turnover-free game, Kansas City managed to grind out a 13-7 win.

Needless to say, facing Jordan Love in his first career start instead of reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers was obviously a big help. But even if their last two games have come against an injury-plagued New York Giants offense and a Packers offense without Aaron Rodgers, Kansas City’s average of 12 points allowed per game in those two contests is still a huge drop-off from the 29 points per game the team allowed across its 3-4 SU start to the season.

Las Vegas News & Notes

Derek Carr threw 46 passes in last Sunday’s 23-16 loss on the road to the New York Giants. Carr had three turnovers in the game with two interceptions and a fumble. The Raiders clearly missed Henry Ruggs III in the passing game as running back Kenyan Drake was the team’s second-leading receiver with six catches for 70 yards behind tight end Darren Waller’s seven catches for 92 yards.

The Raiders signed DeSean Jackson on Monday to try to fill the deep threat void that Ruggs left behind. It will be interesting to see if Las Vegas makes an attempt to claim or sign the recently waived Odell Beckham Jr. as well. Las Vegas has averaged 31.4 points per game in its five wins this season and only 13 points per game in its three losses.

How Kansas City Will Cover

Kansas City’s defense will get a tougher test this week than it has had over the team’s last two games. If the improvements we’ve seen on the defensive side of the ball hold up against Derek Carr, the Chiefs should have no problem winning this game as long as they stay out of turnover trouble.

How Las Vegas Will Cover

The Raiders have allowed 35 points per game in their last six games against the Chiefs and no less than 28 points in any of those six games. The most likely path to victory comes from having a good day on offense and winning in a shootout.
