AFC West up for grabs as Chiefs and Chargers battle for top spot

The AFC West division lead will be up for grabs in a special Saturday doubleheader in Week 15 where the Kansas City Chiefs host the Los Angeles Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs took care of business in Week 14, smashing Oakland and killing the Raiders’ playoff hopes in the process. They’ll look to do the same vs the Chargers and opened as a slight favorite.

SHARK BITES
  • The total has gone UNDER in five of the Chargers’ last seven games against the Chiefs.
  • The Chiefs are 8-1 ATS in their last nine games vs AFC West teams.
  • The Chargers are 4-1 ATS in their last five games on the road.

It’s hard to determine if KC’s win was more the result of their efforts or how poorly the Raiders played. The Chiefs finally resembled the team that started 5-0 SU and ATS with their suffocating defense and dominating run game led by Kareem Hunt. What Chiefs backers are hoping for is more of this type of play and less of the horrible performances evident when they went 1-6 SU and ATS from Week 6 through Week 13. The point of emphasis for Kansas City should be their run game: the Chargers are the worst team in the NFL in allowing over 133 yards on the ground per game. Bettors will be very interested to know that the Chiefs are 7-0 SU in their last seven games vs the Chargers.

The Chargers shot themselves in the foot with an 0-4 SU start but since then have looked like a completely different team. At 7-2 SU and 6-3 ATS since losing to Philadelphia in Week 4, Los Angeles is in the driver’s seat to get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2013. Philip Rivers has led the way and since Week 4 has thrown 17 touchdowns and only three interceptions, but we bettors don’t forget that he had his worst game of the season vs the Chiefs when he threw three interceptions and no touchdowns. Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters is expected back for this matchup and will most likely be shadowing Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen, so Rivers will need to explore different matchups to exploit the Chiefs’ 27th-ranked passing defense.

The total opened at 45.5 and bettors may want to consider the UNDER. The total has gone UNDER in seven of the Chargers’ last eight games and they employ a defense that only allows 17.3 points per game (ranked second in the NFL). When you factor in that the UNDER has hit in four of the Chiefs’ last five games, expect a tightly contested battle between these two divisional foes.
