Chargers clinging to slim playoff hopes vs Jets

The Los Angeles Chargers will look to keep their slim playoff hopes alive in the Big Apple in Week 16 vs the New York Jets. The Chargers are coming off an embarrassing 30-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and their highly touted defense got exposed. However, Los Angeles’s chances to make the postseason are still barely intact and it’s now a must-win game in New York. The Chargers opened as 6.5-point favorites to run over the jinxed Jets.

  • The Chargers are 1-4 SU in their last five games in the early afternoon.
  • The Jets are 5-1 SU and 6-0 ATS in their last six games after consecutive losses.
  • The Chargers are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games.

It seemed like a storybook ending was set for the Los Angeles Chargers. They had just won four in a row after an 0-4 SU start to the season and were the pick of a lot of experts to challenge New England and Pittsburgh for the AFC crown. Well, the Chiefs may have put an end to that and now the Chargers will need to take care of business over the next two weeks and hope teams ahead of them stumble. What got exposed vs the Chiefs was their rush defense, which ranks 30th in the NFL, allowing over 128 yards per game. And the Chargers don’t want to look past the Jets, who gave the Saints everything they could handle before falling to New Orleans 31-19. Bettors will also be interested to know that the Chargers are 2-1 ATS this season when favored by 6.5 or more.

New York just won’t go away. In a year when many pegged them to be the worst team in the AFC, the Jets continue to play hard and give opposing teams fits. It hasn’t really translated to wins, though, as they’re 5-9 SU this season and quarterback Bryce Petty will need to improve his play after he was smothered by the Saints defense, which held him to 19 completions on 39 attempts and two interceptions. The saving grace for the Jets, however, is they’ve been a decent cover bet this season and are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games as an underdog. New York has also been a dog of 6.5 points or more five times this season and while they may be 0-5 SU in those games, they’re 3-2 ATS and have covered three straight times.

The OVER has hit in six of the Jets’ last eight games but the UNDER could be the way to go in this matchup. The Chargers are ranked third in the NFL in points allowed with teams only scoring 18.2 points per game on their defense and the UNDER has hit in eight of their last nine games. When you factor in they’ll be facing Petty, the UNDER might be a great wager to cash in.
