Odds on Who Will Be the Starting QB for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020

Los Angeles Chargers Quarterback Odds

With longtime quarterback Philip Rivers moving on to Indianapolis, the Los Angeles Chargers find themselves in the market for a quarterback for the 2020 NFL season. According to sportsbooks, the odds are heavily in favor of Tyrod Taylor starting for the Bolts in Week 1.

Taylor is the odds-on -300 favorite to open the season as the Chargers’ starting QB at BetOnline, followed by Justin Herbert (+500), Jameis Winston (+700), Andy Dalton (+1200), Tua Tagovailoa (+1600), Jordan Love (+2000), Jake Fromm (+4000) and Colin Kaepernick (+10000).

Brady is Off to Tampa, So What Now?

The Chargers were heavily involved in the Tom Brady sweepstakes but came up just short after Brady decided to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on March 17. With Brady out of the picture, the attention shifted to the remaining free-agent quarterbacks on the market, but it sounds like the franchise is set to stay put instead of making a trade or signing a free agent.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Chargers are not expected to sign or trade for a veteran QB at this point. With Winston available in free agency and Dalton and Cam Newton on the trading block, all signs point to the team taking a quarterback in the upcoming NFL draft.

Expect L.A. to Take a QB in the Draft

The Chargers, who hold the No. 6 overall pick in the draft, are in an interesting position. Cincinnati is widely expected to take presumptive top pick Joe Burrow at No. 1, while the Miami Dolphins are picking fifth and are projected to take a QB.

Tagovailoa has been linked to the Dolphins, yet if the Chargers wanted to pursue the Alabama product, they could make a trade to leapfrog the Dolphins. The New York Giants, who hold the No. 4 pick, could easily trade back and pick up some additional assets throughout the draft.

Herbert was a standout quarterback at Oregon and has all the makings of a solid future NFL signal-caller, so it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Chargers take him at No. 6 if they don’t move up. Still, with Taylor already on the roster, it would be a surprise to see any rookie get the start in Week 1 of the upcoming campaign.
