Rams Big Underdogs vs Seahawks in Wake of Fisher Firing

What a week for the Los Angeles Rams. After their blowout loss to the Falcons, Rams ownership announced that Jeff Fisher was fired effective immediately and that John Fassel would take over in the interim with just under 80 hours to prepare for their rivalry game with the Seahawks on a short week.

SHARK BITES
  • The Rams are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games against the Seahawks and 3-0 SU in their last 3.
  • The Seahawks are 7-0 SU and 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 games after a loss.
  • The Rams are 0-7 SU and 0-6-1 ATS in their last 7 games as underdog.

There is, however, plenty of solace in this one for Rams bettors as teams who fire their coaches mid-season have a lot more success than you’d expect. Last season, three teams – the Titans, Eagles and Dolphins – fired their coaches and brought in an interim guy. All three of those teams won and covered their next games and all of them – coincidentally enough – were road underdogs.

If you parlay that trend with the Rams’ success over the Seahawks the last two seasons, it makes this a tough game to cap. The line for the Thursday nighter opened at 14 points but moved to 15 with the Fisher news. If it closes at 14 points or more, it will be the largest spread we’ve seen in the NFL this season.

All of this said, the Seahawks are the far superior team and have been one of the best second-half bets in the NFL the past few years. Another loss to the Rams would be a tough one for Pete Carroll to swallow not even a week after being on the receiving end of a beatdown at the hands of the Packers.

The Seahawks have been inconsistent in 2016 but have not posted consecutive losses since they faltered to Cam Newton and the Panthers in Week 6 last year. This is the same team that went into Foxborough in Week 11 and beat the Patriots as 6-point underdogs. In a perfect world, Russell Wilson and the ’Hawks would pound the Rams but as the NFL proves week after week, anything can happen in a divisional rivalry game.
