Odds Indicate Fitzpatrick Has the Edge on Rosen to Win Dolphins’ Starting QB Job

Ryan Fitzpatrick #14 of the Miami Dolphins throws the ball in practice drills during training camp at Baptist Health Training Facility at Nova Southern University on on July 27, 2019 in Davie, Florida.

When the Arizona Cardinals drafted Kyler Murray with the first overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the writing was already on the wall about Josh Rosen’s tenure in the desert. Despite the Miami Dolphins buying low on Rosen shortly after, the UCLA product is not guaranteed the starting job in his new surroundings.

Online sportsbook BetOnline has released a prop on which quarterback will start Week 1 for the Miami Dolphins against the Baltimore Ravens, with journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick as the heavy -300 favorite. Rosen is coming back as the +200 underdog at the shop.

Is Rosen Already Out of the Dolphins’ Long-Term Plans?

Dolphins head coach Brian Flores recently told reporters that Rosen is struggling with fundamental things such as “getting guys in and out of the huddle,” decision-making and body language. Per Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, the club has already made plans to be in attendance for the majority of the games this year for Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa, Georgia’s Jake Fromm and Oregon’s Justin Herbert.

Considering the Dolphins got Rosen from the Cardinals for a second-round pick in this year’s draft, Miami general manager Chris Grier wasn’t making a huge gamble on the 22-year-old. This is going to be an incredibly important year for Rosen, as if the Dolphins do decide to take a quarterback in the first round of the 2020 draft, he could very likely be looking for his third NFL team in as many years.

Fitzpatrick Continues to Get the Job Done at 37

Fitzpatrick is far from a long-term solution at the quarterback position for the Fins, but the veteran looks like the much safer option under center with the regular season drawing closer. The 37-year-old showed flashes of brilliance for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers while filling in for Jameis Winston last season. “FitzMagic” did have a few speed bumps along the way, however, and it’s been a rarity for him to play at a high level throughout a whole season in his career.

You’re not going to find much value at the current -200 number, but backing Fitzpatrick to win the starting gig is a no-brainer to me. If Rosen lights it up in the remaining preseason contests, that could change, but I believe that new head coach Brian Flores will opt to go with the much more experienced Fitzpatrick over the inconsistent Rosen out of the gate.

Oddsmakers Aren’t Expecting Much From Dolphins in 2019

The Dolphins boast the lowest projected season win total in the league at OVER/UNDER 4.5, and they have the longest odds to win the Super Bowl (+15000). It’s likely going to be a long year in South Beach, but the quarterback situation is certainly something to keep an eye on.

Which Quarterback Will Start Week 1 for the Dolphins in 2019?
  • Ryan Fitzpatrick -300
  • Josh Rosen +200
