Vikings-Packers Set for More Fireworks

Davante Adams vs the Houston Texans

At the outset of the season, a Week 8 matchup between the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers would have been pegged by many as a marquee NFC North showdown. Yet, while the Packers (5-1 SU, 5-1 ATS) have certainly done their part to give this matchup extra meaning, the Vikings (1-5 SU, 3-3 ATS) are already fighting to remain in the NFC postseason picture.

Opening Odds Analysis

The Packers opened as 3-point favorites but have soared into the -6.5 to -7 range depending on where you bet. The total, on the other hand, has dipped from an opening of 57.5 down to 54.5.

Minnesota News & Notes

Entering Week 6, you could have made a compelling argument that the Vikings had turned a corner over their previous three games; despite going 1-2 SU over that span, the two losses both came by a single point. Whatever momentum Minnesota had quickly disappeared, however, with a 40-23 loss to Atlanta in which the Falcons racked up a whopping 462 total yards.

With the Week 7 bye now behind them, the Vikings will look to tighten things up on defense while getting more out of an offense that ranks near the middle of the pack in scoring (25.8 ppg). The expected return of standout running back Dalvin Cook should give the Vikings a huge boost in that regard. Cook ranks fifth in the league in rushing despite having played just five games.

Green Bay News & Notes

The Packers kicked off their season with a wild 43-34 win over the Vikings – and aside from an uncharacteristic dud against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 6, that Green Bay offense has kept humming along. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers continues to look like a legitimate MVP candidate, entering Week 7 ranked third in the NFL in passing touchdowns (17).

Much was made of the Packers’ decision to bypass the receiving position at the NFL draft, but whatever Green Bay is rolling out on a weekly basis has certainly worked so far. And it doesn’t hurt to have one of the best in the game in Davante Adams, who has 449 receiving yards and four touchdowns in four games and is a can’t-miss daily fantasy option against the porous Vikings.

Betting Pick: OVER 54.5 (-110)

While we might not get a repeat of that Week 1 slugfest, both sides should do enough on offense (thanks, in Minnesota’s case, to the return of Cook) to push this game above the total.
