  • The Daniel Jones era is now officially underway for the New York Giants, but he faces his biggest test to date with the Minnesota Vikings in Week 5. Despite winning two straight games, the Giants are home underdogs. Are bettors wise to stay skeptical of New York’s newest sensation?

    Sportsbook Odds Analysis

    Entering the season, Minnesota was considered an upper-echelon team and the Giants, well, not. Through four weeks, that hasn’t exactly changed, as the Giants are 4.5-point home underdogs. Bettors jumped on the Vikings early, as the line shifted to 5.5, but it has since rebounded to an even 5 points. The total is set at 45, as Daniel Jones has injected life into the Giants, while the Vikings offense has shown capable of scoring on weaker defenses.

    The Vikings had a key divisional matchup against the fearsome Chicago defense in Week 4, and things did not end well for Minnesota.

    The NFL’s No. 2 running game was limited to just 40 rushing yards, forcing Minnesota to rely on quarterback Kirk Cousins … and the Vikings tallied just six points in a 16-6 loss.

    Cousins threw for just 233 yards, was sacked six times and fumbled twice. He’s averaging just 184 passing yards per game this season, with three total touchdowns and two interceptions. The loss resulted in Cousins getting called out by teammate Adam Thielen postgame, as the receiver highlighted how one-dimensional the Vikings offense currently is.

    The total has gone UNDER in five of Minnesota’s last six games. The Vikings can scratch out wins that way against mediocre teams, but against the NFL’s best, it’s not a sustainable game plan. They need Cousins to start pulling his weight.

    New York News & Notes

    Yes, Daniel Jones has looked much better than Eli Manning and injected life into the offense. Yes, he’s won both his starts and has the Giants at 2-2. But let’s slow down on comparing the sixth overall pick to the other young, elite quarterbacks in the NFL today.

    Jones’ first win was an improbable comeback against a Buccaneers squad that utterly collapsed (and missed a game-winning 34-yard field goal), while last week they crushed a Washington squad that may very well be the worst non-Dolphins team in the NFL.

    Jones has averaged just 192 passing yards in his two games, against the second- and third-worst scoring defenses in the league. This week he gets an actual test in Minnesota’s sixth-ranked defense and he will still be without superstar running back Saquon Barkley.

    Jones does have top receiver Sterling Shepard back from injury, along with tight end Evan Engram, but he’s going to need to deliver his best performance yet in Week 5 if New York wants to buck the trend of going 1-6 SU and ATS in its last seven games as a home underdog.

    Betting Pick: Minnesota -4.5

    Minnesota’s defense is by far the best unit on the field Sunday. They’ll be the difference in this game and 4.5 points isn’t enough to sway me from taking Minnesota to cover.
