Monday Night Football Odds

This week's Monday Night Football matchup leaves a lot to be desired, as the Cardinals try to snap their five-game losing streak when they host the equally underwhelming Niners.

Arizona dropped their fifth in a row last week, getting slammed by Kansas City 31-13 as a 7-point underdog. The Cardinals' offense continued to plod along behind Derek Anderson, who passed for 295 yards with a touchdown.

The Arizona ground game delivered a better effort but never found the end zone as Tim Hightower and Beanie Wells combined for rush for 101 yards on 20 carries. [ Matchup Stats and Betting Trends ]

The 49ers are coming off their worst defeat of the season, a 21-0 shutout loss to Tampa Bay as a 3.5-point home favorite. Troy Smith was totally ineffective in the loss, completing only 16 of 31 passes for 148 yards with an interception. Smith was also sacked six times, and despite last week's poor result he'll remain the 49ers' starting QB.

To help him succeed Smith could use some help out of the backfield; last week versus a suspect Buccaneers run defense Frank Gore could only muster 23 yards on 12 carries.

Both the Cardinals and the 49ers have a few injury concerns heading into the Monday nighter. Arizona could be without receiver Steve Breaston, who is questionable with a knee injury, while wideout Early Doucet suffered a concussion last week but is expected to play after taking part in practice and being upgraded to probable.

San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis has been playing through a bad ankle injury for weeks and should continue to do so on Monday and throughout the rest of the season. The ankle is clearly hindering Davis, as he has been limited to one catch in two of his last three games. Also hurting for the 49ers this week is kicker Joe Nedney; he's doubtful with a swollen knee, and Shane Andrus is expected to handle the place-kicking duties.

Last season the 49ers swept the season series against Arizona with a 24-9 win at home as a 4-point underdog and a 20-16 win at San Francisco as a 4.5-point underdog. In their last six games versus the Cardinals the 49ers are 4-2 SU and 4-1-1 ATS. In Monday's game San Francisco is a slim 1-point road favorite at Sportsbook.ag, but so far this season when the 49ers have been listed as the favorite they are only 3-5 SU and 2-6 ATS.

Despite the 49ers' poor record as a favorite this season we expect them to win and cover tonight. The Cardinals own the worst scoring defense in the NFL, and that should help the 49ers get over their recent scoring woes and get back into the win column. Gore should also rebound nicely on Monday against an Arizona run defense that is allowing 135.1 yards per game, 28th in the league.
