Patriots vs Packers Picks & Odds: Life Without Mac Jones Begins For New England

The New England Patriots (1-2 SU, 0-2-1 ATS) visit Lambeau Field to face Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers (2-1, 2-1). The Pack are heavy favorites, in large part because New England quarterback Mac Jones is out indefinitely after injuring his ankle last week. See below for more on this matchup, including a Patriots vs Packers prediction.

Patriots vs Packers Sportsbook Odds

Green Bay opened as a 6.5-point favorite, but that has since jumped to double digits. New England has won three of the last four games between these two teams, but just once in the last four trips to Lambeau. The total opened at 42.5, but that number has dropped. The UNDER is 5-1 in the last six head-to-head meetings.

Let The Brian Hoyer Show Begin

New England lost much more than a game last week. Not only did Lamar Jackson and the Ravens beat the Patriots 37-26, but quarterback Mac Jones suffered an ankle injury late in the contest and is expected to miss several weeks. Enter veteran pivot Brian Hoyer.

The 36-year-old will make just his second career start with New England, in his second stint with the team. Hoyer is a journeyman who has played for six different teams through his 14-year career. The good news for Hoyer and the Patriots is that their big offseason acquisition, DeVante Parker, broke out last week with a huge game. He was targeted 10 times, picking up 156 receiving yards against Baltimore.

The numbers aren’t in New England’s favor, though. The Pats haven’t covered a spread in their last four games as an underdog or in their last five games against teams with a winning record.

Packers Replicating Start To Last Season

If you are sensing a little deja vu with the Pack, you aren’t alone. Last year, after getting trounced by New Orleans in their season opener, Aaron Rodgers and company reeled off seven straight wins en route to a 13-4 season and yet another division title. Fast-forward to this year and Green Bay has won two consecutive games after a lackluster 23-7 loss in Week 1 to the Vikings.

Their most recent victory came over Tom Brady and the Bucs last week when Rodgers threw for 255 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Rookie receiver Romeo Doubs caught eight passes for 73 yards and scored his first career TD in the 14-12 win. Don’t be surprised if his role expands as the season moves ahead.

Patriots: Keys To Win

New England has turned the ball over eight times through three games. Only the New Orleans Saints have more turnovers than the Patriots this young season. The Pats need to take care of the ball and not give Rodgers extra chances to put more points on the board. If they do, the odds of them winning will be much lower than they currently are.

Packers: Keys To Win

Distribute the ball. Green Bay has had a different player lead the team in receiving yards in each of the first three weeks. It certainly helps that Rodgers is a magician when it comes to picking apart defenses. Who will be his favorite target this week? If he can continue to have opposing teams guessing, then it should be easy money if you take the home team when making your Patriots vs Packers pick.
