Sportsbook Odds Analysis

Early betting action leaned slightly toward the Jets, pushing the Patriots down slightly from their opener of -7.5 to New England -7. The total has remained steady at 41 points. The UNDER is 7-1 in the last eight meetings between the Patriots and Jets.

New England News & Notes

Cam Newton fumbled the ball away in the final minute of the Patriots’ 24-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. New England was in the red zone at the time of the fumble and would have at least had the chance to tie the game with a field goal if not for the turnover.

In his first two games with the Patriots, Newton completed 71.4 percent of his passes, averaged 276 passing yards and rushed for four touchdowns. In his last four, he has completed 62.4 percent of his passes, averaged only 147.8 passing yards per game and has thrown six interceptions with only one touchdown pass.

With the loss, the Patriots fell to 2-5 SU and 3-4 ATS on the season. New England’s streaks of 11 straight AFC East titles and 17 straight seasons with 10 or more wins are both in serious jeopardy. As Tom Brady thrives in Tampa Bay, Bill Belichick is struggling without his former franchise quarterback.

New York News & Notes

The Jets scraped out their first ATS win of the season against the Buffalo Bills two weeks ago in an 18-10 loss as 9.5-point underdogs. Last week, New York was a whopping 19.5-point underdog against the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Chiefs easily covered the spread in a 35-9 win. New York has now scored 10 points or less in each of its last four games and is averaging 7.3 points per game over that stretch.

At 0-8 SU and 1-7 ATS with an average margin of defeat of 18 points, this Jets team is hopelessly bad. All Jets fans have to look forward to at this point is the potential of the No. 1 overall pick in next year’s NFL draft and the eventual firing of Adam Gase, who inexplicably still has a job through this nightmare of a season.

Betting Pick: New England -7

The Patriots have not looked good at all during their current four-game losing streak. But a game against this Jets squad should be just what the doctor ordered. New York hasn’t lost a game by fewer than eight points yet and probably won’t break that streak on Monday.
