  • The Carolina Panthers (0-1 straight up, 0-1 against the spread) will try to pick up their first win of the season on Monday night when they host the New Orleans Saints (1-0, 0-1) as small home underdogs in a nationally televised NFC South divisional matchup. Top overall draft pick Bryce Young will be showcased for Carolina against new New Orleans quarterback Derek Carr, who was solid in winning his first start at home in Week 1. 

    Latest Betting Notes: Saints

    Carr was supposed to breathe some fresh air into the New Orleans offense as the team’s big free-agent signing in the offseason, and he took advantage of his weapons in throwing for 305 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The only real negative was something that plagued him from his days with the Las Vegas Raiders – a lack of touchdown drives.

    Carr led one drive into the end zone, where wide receiver Rashid Shaheed ended up after a 19-yard scoring strike. Other than that, the Saints were limited to three Blake Grupe field goals in a 16-15 victory that the defense protected. The lack of touchdowns cost New Orleans a cover in a game that should not have been that close.

    Latest Betting Notes: Panthers

    Young did not have the kind of debut he was hoping for at Atlanta, as he threw for just 146 yards on 20-of-38 attempts with one touchdown and two picks. He also ran three times for 17 yards, but Carolina simply lacks playmakers at this point, and that will keep his potential limited throughout his rookie campaign.

    One positive for the Panthers was that running backs Miles Sanders and Chuba Hubbard enjoyed some success on the ground, rushing for a combined 132 yards on 27 carries in their 24-10 loss to the Falcons. Sanders was playing his first game for Carolina after starting for the defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles a year ago, and he also added four catches for 26 yards.

    The Keys to Victory: Saints

    Carr spread the ball out nicely with five of his teammates making two catches of more. Second-year wide receiver Chris Olave led the way with eight catches for 112 yards while Shaheed and Michael Thomas combined for 10 catches and 150 yards.

    Carr became overly reliant on Davante Adams last year when the former college teammates were back together for the first time as pros, and he needs to continue depending on multiple players in order to stay successful, especially with running back Alvin Kamara (suspension) out.

    The Keys to Victory: Panthers

    This Carolina team will continue to be a work in progress, and head coach Frank Reich’s biggest challenge is trying to find a way to build Young’s confidence with a limited roster.

    The two best friends for a rookie quarterback are often his running back and tight end, and those two positions led the way in receptions last week with 12 between them. Starting tight end Hayden Hurst had five receptions for 41 yards and the team’s lone touchdown, and Young must find a way for his wide receivers to get more than two each.
