Opening Odds Analysis

New Orleans is getting some early love from bettors off their 34-23 win over Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week, as the team covered the spread as a 4-point home favorite.

Las Vegas edged the Carolina Panthers 34-30 as a 3-point road favorite as well, but the difference in the level of opponents for the Raiders and Saints has to be taken into consideration here. With fans, Vegas might be getting more money in its home debut.

New Orleans News & Notes

New Orleans looked good – not great – against Brady and Tampa Bay, leaving a lot of room for improvement as one of the favorites to win the NFL title. The Saints are in Super Bowl or bust mode, and quarterback Drew Brees is not getting any younger. If you watched this game, you saw a couple of future Hall of Famers in Brady and Brees square off opposite each other, but it was really their teammates who decided the game.

The New Orleans defense is legit and forced Brady into a pair of interceptions, including one that cornerback Janoris Jenkins returned 36 yards for a touchdown. But the Saints simply did a better job of running the ball and controlling the clock than the Buccaneers.

Las Vegas News & Notes

The Raiders got exactly what they were looking for on the road against the Panthers heading into their home opener, and they are now riding even more momentum into what is one of the most exciting times in the city’s history.

Sure, the COVID-19 pandemic has put a damper on the festivities surrounding the first-ever NFL game in Las Vegas, but the players will undoubtedly have extra motivation regardless of the lack of fans in attendance.

Quarterback Derek Carr might very well be the most motivated of the Raiders since he has a fresh start here after the Oakland fans essentially ran him out of town. But Carr also has some weapons around him in wide receiver Henry Ruggs III, the team’s first-round draft pick, along with running back Josh Jacobs, last year’s first-rounder.

Betting Pick: Raiders +6

The adrenaline will be pumping for Las Vegas in Allegiant Stadium, and that could work for or against the home team in this situation. Raiders head coach Jon Gruden is a quarterback guru, though, and will watch film of Brees from last week extremely closely to find that he is not the same player he used to be. Look for Carr to go toe to toe with him and keep this game closer than expected with the potential for an outright upset as well.
