Betting Preview: New Orleans Saints vs Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks (2-0) will look to stay perfect on Sunday when they host the New Orleans Saints (1-1), who just lost quarterback Drew Brees for up to six weeks following thumb surgery. Teddy Bridgewater will replace Brees during that stretch, and the Seahawks also took advantage of an elbow injury to quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in a 28-26 upset win over the Pittsburgh Steelers last Sunday as 4-point road underdogs.

Date/Time: September 22, 4:25 p.m. ET

TV Coverage: CBS

Opening Odds: New Orleans -2 | O/U 48.5 (Line History)

Opening Odds Analysis

Seattle is a 4.5-point home favorite in early betting action after it was revealed that Brees has opted for thumb surgery in hopes of returning for New Orleans later this season. The Saints will remain on the West Coast following a 27-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams as 2-point dogs.

New Orleans News & Notes

This is Bridgewater’s time to shine, as he signed a fully guaranteed one-year contract with the Saints in the offseason worth $7.25 million as a quality insurance policy for Brees. He obviously did not plan to see the field this early in the year, but the opportunity is there to lead a talented squad to a big road win in this spot and help earn himself a large payday next season in the process as long as he can stay healthy.

After throwing for just 165 yards on 17-of-30 passing against the Rams, Bridgewater will have to do better vs the Seahawks, who have won their first two games by a combined three points. Seattle’s defense has surrendered an average of 23 points per game so far, and New Orleans failed to score an offensive touchdown last week for only the fourth time under head coach Sean Payton.

Seattle News & Notes

The Seahawks keep finding ways to win, with quarterback Russell Wilson continuing to look like an early NFL MVP candidate. Wilson completed 29 of 35 passes for a career-best 82.85 percent completion rate and ended up with 300 yards plus three touchdowns for five overall through the first two games.

The Saints had problems containing quarterback Deshaun Watson of the Houston Texans in the season opener, and they had the benefit of playing that game at home. Seattle remains one of the toughest places to play for opponents, and New Orleans will have an added disadvantage with Bridgewater set to make his first start for the team there in what should be a hostile environment. The Seahawks have many edges here.

Betting Pick: Seahawks -4.5

Bridgewater has a lot to prove to bettors without showing them much since his healthier days with the Minnesota Vikings early in his career. Wilson will be the difference as Seattle covers.
