Seahawks Hoping To Stay Afloat In NFC Playoff Race

Geno Smith and the Seahawks are home underdogs vs the Saints in NFL betting odds.

The Seattle Seahawks (2-4 SU, 3-3 ATS) will play their second game without starting quarterback Russell Wilson and try to break a two-game skid with Geno Smith under center as rare home underdogs against the New Orleans Saints (3-3, 3-3) in the Week 7 Monday Night Football matchup. The Seahawks have closed as home dogs twice since 2018, losing both games SU and ATS.

Opening Odds Analysis

After watching Smith’s performance for Seattle at the end of last Sunday night’s 23-20 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, bettors apparently like New Orleans even more, moving the visitors up to 5-point road favorites at sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark. Smith had a decent game leading up to the point where he literally fumbled away his team’s chance to earn a road victory at Pittsburgh, leading to the game-winning field goal for the hosts in OT. Regardless, the Saints have also played some of their best football outside of the Superdome, going 3-1 SU and ATS, including the opener at Jacksonville.

New Orleans News & Notes

New Orleans is coming off an early bye week that followed a 33-22 win over the Washington Football Team as a 2.5-point road favorite. The Saints have played only one game in the Superdome so far this season and lost that to the New York Giants 27-21 as 7-point favorites in Week 4. They have to like their chances in this spot too against a depleted Seahawks offense that is also missing running back Chris Carson (neck).

New Orleans quarterback Jameis Winston threw four touchdown passes in his last start at Washington, with two of them going to second-year wide receiver Marquez Callaway. Without Michael Thomas in the lineup, Callaway has emerged as a top target for Winston.

Seattle News & Notes

So where does Seattle go from here? The team played as well as could be expected at Pittsburgh and nearly pulled off the upset. It was an unfortunate way to lose, but anyone who picked the Seahawks to beat the Steelers is crazy.

The toughest part for Seattle backers was seeing wide receivers D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett underutilized without Wilson on the field. While Metcalf still had six catches for 58 yards, Lockett had only two on seven targets for 35 yards.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll needs to help Smith gain some confidence with his deep ball so he can stretch the field more this week.

How New Orleans Will Cover

Winston’s play has been the difference so far, as he has thrown at least two touchdown passes in each of the team’s three wins and totaled one touchdown and two interceptions combined in the two losses. He is coming off a season-high 279 passing yards vs Washington, but tossing another couple touchdown passes could be the key to covering.

How Seattle Will Cover

You cannot talk about Smith without mentioning turnovers and sacks, both of which plagued Seattle at Pittsburgh. Smith was sacked five times by the Steelers, and his fumble cost the Seahawks that game. If Smith can avoid the pass rush and turnovers, then they can rebound and cover as home dogs of more than 3.5 points for the first time since 2018.
