New York Giants Props: How Will Geno Smith Fare in Place of Eli Manning?

Eli Manning has been the face of the New York Giants for 13 years. He’s a two-time Super Bowl MVP, four-time Pro Bowler and holds basically every major passing record in franchise history. And now, as the 2-9 SU Giants prepare for a meeting with the Oakland Raiders in the midst of a lost season, he’s lost his starting job to Geno Smith.

After 14 seasons and 210 consecutive starts, it looks like Manning’s time with the Giants is done. Coach Ben McAdoo told the media on Wednesday that Smith will start this weekend in place of Peyton’s younger brother, which caused an uproar from fans of Big Blue. McAdoo told Manning he could start the game to keep his streak intact before giving way to Smith, but the signal-caller declined the offer.

In a campaign that’s been riddled with drama and underwhelming performances, this is a new low for McAdoo and the Giants. The bench boss is a near lock to lose his job at the end of the year, but benching the best QB in team history for a man who was an absolute bust with the crosstown Jets is a head-scratcher, to say the least. At the age of 36, Manning isn’t what he used to be, but if you’re planning on moving on from him, at least wait until the end of the season to do it.

When it comes to betting opportunities, Bovada is on the case. The shop is offering props on Smith’s performance in Week 13, with odds available on touchdown passes, interceptions and the OVER/UNDER on passing yards he’ll throw for.

In 30 starts with the Jets from 2013 to 2016, the West Virginia product threw 28 touchdowns and 36 interceptions and possessed a quarterback rating of 72.4 and a completion percentage of 57.9. Smith is only 27, but unless he’s learned how to be a good quarterback while backing up Manning, it’s a major stretch to expect him to become the Giants’ quarterback of the future.

And to think, the Jets were supposed to be the butt of the joke in New York this year. Things change quickly in the city that never sleeps.
