Betting Preview: New York Giants vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers

UPDATE: The Giants announced Tuesday that Daniel Jones would replace Eli Manning as the team’s starting quarterback.

A pair of teams dealing with quarterback issues will square off in Tampa on Sunday when the Buccaneers (1-1) host the winless New York Giants (0-2). The Buccaneers will get the benefit of some extra rest, though, after upsetting the Carolina Panthers 20-14 as 6.5-point road underdogs in the Week 2 Thursday Night Football matchup.

Sportsbook Odds: Tampa Bay -4 | O/U 45.5 (Line History)

Sportsbook Odds Analysis

This line has moved as much as 3 points in favor of the Buccaneers in early betting action, and it could jump even higher depending on who the Giants will have under center. Bettors will likely have a strong opinion backing rookie Daniel Jones if he gets the nod at quarterback or fading veteran Eli Manning if he continues to play despite his struggles.

New York News & Notes

Stay tuned as head coach Pat Shurmur is expected to name this week’s starting quarterback between Manning and Jones by Wednesday. Manning has done little to keep his starting job, failing to help his team generate more than 17 points in either of the first two games.

Granted, the Giants are very limited talent-wise offensively aside from running back Saquon Barkley, who has been the lone bright spot in an otherwise dim start to the year. Barkley had 107 rushing yards on 18 carries and scored a touchdown in last week’s 28-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills as 1-point home underdogs.

With yet another setback, New York fell to 0-2 straight up and against the spread after going 4-0 SU and ATS in the preseason with Jones seeing a lot of action.

Tampa Bay News & Notes

Tampa Bay’s quarterback situation is not much better with starter Jameis Winston performing only slightly better last Thursday at Carolina than he did in a season-Sportsbook 31-17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers as 1-point home favorites. Winston did not turn the ball over against the Panthers after throwing three interceptions in Week 1, including a pair of pick-sixes.

But defensively, the Buccaneers stepped up in Week 2, holding Carolina quarterback Cam Newton and running back Christian McCaffrey in check.

While Newton threw for 333 yards, he completed less than half of his passes and was sacked three times, and McCaffrey was barely a factor with a combined 53 rushing and receiving yards on 18 touches. If they can do the same thing to Barkley, they could blow out the Giants.

Betting Pick: New York +7

The Jones era in New York will likely come sooner than later, and Shurmur will not tolerate another poor effort from Manning even if he gets the nod here. Look for Jones to get some significant playing time either way and do just enough to help the Giants cover the spread.
