NFL Betting Trends: Week 3

When the three most-bet NFL games of the week all go against the public, you can be sure oddsmakers are smiling on Tuesday morning.

And after the Patriots, Saints and Cowboys all lost straight up in Week 2, sportsbooks were celebrating a profitable week.

“Sportsbooks hope to get one or two of those big public games, but they got all three of them,” said Jack Randall. “Even losing the late Sunday games and Monday night as the favorites covered four straight times didn’t put a huge dent in the weekend for them.”

Indeed, the Falcons, Steelers, Chargers and 49ers all covered late to take out some of the sting for NFL bettors. Without that, Week 2 would have been a major slaughterhouse for bettors as they look ahead to Week 3 NFL trends. [ Get updates and injury notes on Twitter ]

When the public teams all lose, most of the teaser and parlay action also goes to the sportsbook. Underdog bettors who picked some of those longshots on the moneyline make a huge profit, but there are not enough of those dog bettors to hurt the book normally.

Totals betting was split 8-8 in a week that saw home teams go 14-2 SU. But four of those home teams were underdogs. Overall, underdogs were 9-7 ATS.
