NFL Draft: Who Will Be Second Overall Pick?

The San Francisco 49ers own the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft and they could decide to go in a multitude of directions. What Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch do for their first major move during their tenure with the 49ers could have a major impact on their future with the team.

Solomon Thomas had the top odds to be the No. 2 overall selection at open, but that distinction now belongs to Myles Garrett. Garrett has seen his odds increase dramatically to go second overall, as the rumor mill has started hinting that the Cleveland Browns may take quarterback Mitch Trubisky first overall.

Another notable player on the list is the previously mentioned Trubisky at +850. If this is Shanahan’s guy, then San Fran needs to take him. However, there have been plenty of rumblings that Shanahan still wants to go after Kirk Cousins following this upcoming season. If that is true, then drafting a quarterback this high wouldn’t make much sense. Maybe the 49ers will be content to ride stopgap Brian Hoyer for a season and either go after Cousins next year or look to draft from what looks like a better QB class.

In my mind, I think the field also has a good chance to hit at +140. If Garrett goes first overall, which he should, then this pick is hard to predict. But I also can’t help but think Lynch will find himself in love with one of the top-end safeties in this draft. Malik Hooker or Jamal Adams could both find their names called early and the former safety could make an internal push to land one of them.
