Consult this list throughout the game and check out the teams’ point differentials in each situation. Looking at the Patriots, for example, they’re an impressive 11-1 SU after scoring first with a point differential of +14.25 points. Use the point differential to help determine if there’s good value on the in-game spread.

  • When the first score was a TD (25 times), the team won 68.0% of the time (17-8).
  • When the first score was a FG (24 times), the team won 62.5% of the time (15-9).
  • When the first score was a safety (3 times), the team won 100% of the time (3-0).
  • New England has scored first in the Super Bowl three times, going 2-1 in those games (2-0 on TDs as the first score, 0-1 on FG as the first score).
  • The LA Rams have scored first in the Super Bowl twice, going 1-1 in those games (both were FGs).
  • The team that scored first has won seven of the last eight and nine of the last 11 Super Bowls.

  • No team leading by more than 10 points at the end of the first quarter has EVER lost a Super Bowl.
  • Teams that had a lead at the end of the first quarter have won 6 straight Super Bowls. (note this does not include years when the score was tied at the end of the 1st quarter)
  • Teams that are scoreless at the end of the first quarter and whose opponents are not are 6-20.
  • Teams leading by less than seven points at the end of the first quarter are 11-7.
