NFL Week 1 Betting Recap

Favorites may have come out with a winning record in Week 1 of the NFL, but there were two favored teams that cost bettors a ton by losing straight-up. And one underdog that most of the public was betting also failed at home, making it a good Sportsbook weekend for online sportsbooks such as Sportsbook. Overall the favorites posted a tidy 9-5 record ATS in the Thursday and Sunday games - so if you rode favorites all the way you came away with a few bucks in your pocket. However, the five teams that were favored and failed to cover took in a lot of cash. So did the Cardinals, who barely covered a 3-point road spread at St. Louis in a match that saw a large amount of bettors picking the underdog.

The two biggest losers for bettors in Week 1 were Indianapolis and San Francisco. According to the sportsbooks, 93% of the action on the Indianapolis-Houston game was going the way of the Colts, while 92% of the action on the San Francisco-Seattle game was on the 49ers. Underdog bettors - along with oddsmakers - were popping the champagne when both Houston and Seattle pulled off upsets. The Colts were a 1.5-point road favorite and had a near-perfect 15-1 SU record against Houston heading into their Week 1 clash. Peyton Manning had a huge game and passed for 433 yards with three touchdowns, but it still wasn't enough as the Colts fell 34-24. Indy better work on the run defense after Arian Foster burned them for 231 and three touchdowns. The 49ers are supposed to be the team to beat in the NFC West this season. You wouldn't know it, though, by the way they totally bombed their Week 1 game against the Seahawks. As a 3-point road favorite the 49ers offense didn't even show up in a 31-6 loss. The 49ers defense also tanked while allowing Matt Hasselbeck to throw for a pair of touchdowns and run in for another score. How many survivor pool picks at Sportsbook went down in flames with that upset?

The other three favorites to tank for bettors in Week 1 were Atlanta, Chicago, and Dallas. The Falcons looked to be all set to start the season with a win with a matchup against the Steelers without starting QB Ben Roethlisberger as a 1.5-point road favorite. The Steelers struggled to move the ball without Big Ben, but the Falcons' offense was also non-existent in a 15-9 overtime Pittsburgh win. The Bears also appeared to have a plum matchup in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions. Chicago was a 6.5-point home favorite, but almost blew it in a 19-14 win. If Calvin Johnson could have held on to the ball in the end zone the Bears would have lost SU as well. One bright spot for the Bears was the play of Matt Forte: 17 carries for 50 yards and seven receptions for 151 yards and two touchdowns. The Cowboys had better hope their Week 1 loss against the Redskins is their worst game of the season. Dallas made mistake after mistake and it killed them in a 13-7 loss as 4-point favorites. If Dallas delivers a similar effort against the Bears in Week 2 Wade Philips' job could be on the line.
