NFL Week 12 Opening Odds

Usually by the time Thanksgiving Thursday rolls around we have a team or two that is still undefeated or is a virtual lock to make the playoffs. This year, every team has at least two losses, and the playoff picture is still wide open.

This should provide for some great games and intriguing betting action down the stretch.

One game with plenty of playoff implications on the line is Philadelphia at Chicago. The Eagles open as a 3.5-point road favorite at Sports Interaction. Philadelphia followed up their record-breaking win over Washington two weeks ago with another win and cover over the New York Giants last week.

While it is easy to make a case for Michael Vick and the soaring Eagles, Chicago +3.5 may be the side to consider; with the league’s best defense in points allowed (14.6 per game) and home-field advantage, the 7-3 SU (5-4-1 ATS) Bears could keep it close. The Giants were able to contain Vick and if bettors think the Bears defense can copy that blueprint, this line may move down to +3.0 as the week moves on.

Perhaps the most surprising opening line this week was Washington opening at just -2.5 at home against Minnesota at Bovada. Washington (5-5 SU, 6-3-1 ATS) is coming off a win on the road over Tennessee, while Minnesota (3-7 SU and ATS) is coming off a big loss at home to Green Bay.

Not only has Washington performed better both SU and ATS this season, but the home/road splits favor them too as they are 2-3 SU (but 3-1-1 ATS) at home compared to Minnesota’s 0-5 SU and 1-4 ATS road record. Maybe bettors expect Brad Childress’s firing to light a fire under Minnesota like Wade Phillip’s firing did to Dallas; but at -2.5, Washington is tough to pass on.

Opening at -7.5 at Bet365, it looks like the New York Giants are expected to bounce back from their two game losing streak at home this week against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jacksonville has won three straight games both SU and ATS to improve to 6-4 both SU and ATS.

Bettors may side with Jacksonville here and bet this line down to +7.0 or lower considering their recent hot streak, but it’s worth noting that all four of Jacksonville’s losses this season have been by margins of over 20 points each. In 2010, they’ve either won or lost big.

Thanksgiving Thursday’s lines opened at New England -6.5 on the road over Detroit, New Orleans -3.5 on the road over Dallas, and the New York Jets -9.0 at home over Cincinnati.  Other opening lines this week include home favorites Atlanta -2.0 over Green Bay, Baltimore -7.5 over Tampa Bay, and road favorites Pittsburgh -6.0 over Buffalo, Kansas City -1.0 over Seattle, and San Francisco -1.0 over Arizona.
