NFL Week 16 Betting Trends Analysis

How does a team go from leading the NFL in sacks a year ago with 54 to ranking 30th with just 20 this season despite having the same players? Hire Rex Ryan, which is what Buffalo did.

At 6-8, the Bills are missing the playoffs for the 15th straight season, longest streak in the NFL. Tactics certainly aren't Ryan's strength. But he is capable of motivating players. Buffalo is minus six hosting Dallas.

There are handicapping factors and trends in the Bills' favor. The Cowboys are 2-10 in their last 12 games - 3-8-1 against the spread (ATS) - and giving Kelleen Moore his first start because it's become too painful to endure Matt Cassel.

The Cowboys are 1-9 in games without Tony Romo, 2-7-1 ATS. Buffalo lost 35-25 on the road to Washington last week as 2.5-point favorites. The Bills are 7-2 ATS following a defeat. If Ryan can't arouse his players to beat Dallas at home what good is he?

Steelers Riding a Strong December Run

It's rough on Baltimore being 10-point home underdogs to arch-rival Pittsburgh. Unfortunately for the Ravens, they've run out of quality players before the season ran out. They have 18 players on injured reserve. The Steelers are on a 10-0, 9-1 ATS December run.

The Ravens just suffered their fifth home loss in seven games, 34-14 to Kansas City. Never have the Ravens lost this many home games in their 26-year history.

Trend-wise, though, it's not totally bleak for Baltimore. The Ravens are 12-2, 9-5 ATS off a loss of a touchdown or more. They have covered seven of the past 10 times they've been a home 'dog. The Steelers are 4-11 ATS the last 15 times they've been road chalk. Just two of Ben Roethlisberger's 18 touchdown passes have come on the road.

Raiders on 5-20-1 ATS Run as Home Chalk

Oakland is minus five hosting San Diego on Thursday. The Chargers could have motivation issues traveling on a short week following an emotional home victory in what may turn out to have been their final game in San Diego. But the Raiders are 5-20-1 ATS as home favorites. They also are 2-11 in their last 13 AFC West Division matchups.
