NFL Week 17 Opening Odds

Week 17 of NFL betting marks gut-check time for several teams who must win to make the playoffs, but that matters little to fans betting the games.

We just want to know who is going to cover the Week 17 point spreads.

The New York Giants have somewhat shaky NFL odds after two straight disastrous losses. They visit the Washington Redskins, who have played surprisingly well with Rex Grossman at quarterback.

Bettors who like follow trends may want to find reasons to bet OVER, as both teams have been OVER machines in Week 17 (Redskins are 9-1 past 10 seasons and Giants are 9-2 past 11 seasons).

The New York Giants are were 3.5-point favorites in the opening NFL betting lines at Sports Interaction and Sportsbook.ag but the spread has already widened to 4 points. The over/under at both of those books, and many others, is 44.5. Bettors have to tread carefully with the Giants this week.

They’re in meltdown mode – Eli Manning leads the NFL in interceptions – and they’re playing a divisional game on the road.

The Green Bay Packers hammered the Giants last Sunday on the strength of a 400-yard-, four-touchdown passing day from Aaron Rodgers. If they can beat the Chicago Bears at home in Week 17, they’re all but assured a playoff berth.

NFL odds for this game aren’t up yet, likely because there was some talk of the Bears resting their starters. However, since the Bears likely won’t have a first-round bye clinched, they should roll all their regulars. [ Check out Week 17 betting trends ]

The spread should favor the Green Bay Packers by a field goal, give or take. Can Aaron Rodgers pull off some more magic?

The Indianapolis Colts have won three straight games and are in good shape to clinch the AFC South in Week 17; all they have to do is beat the lowly Tennessee Titans. Bovada and Sportsbook.ag both opened the Colts favored by 9.5 points, with the total at 48.

The Colts’ NFL odds of winning this game outright are excellent, especially with Joseph Addai back to run the ball and pick up blitzes, but bettors should watch the spread carefully this week. It grew quickly to double digits, and could be dangerous. Remember, it’s a divisional game but also remember the Colts are 3-14 ATS the past 17 seasons in Week 17.

The one game of the week that is pretty much a playoff game: St. Louis at Seattle. The winner takes the NFC West division. Sportsbook.ag favor the Rams by a point and have the over/under at 43 points.

The temptation may be to pick Seattle; its home fans are deafening and could intimidate a rookie quarterback like Sam Bradford. But some bettors may consider pouncing on St. Louis’ line now. Since Matt Hasselbeck (hip) could miss the game and force Charlie Whitehurst into starting quarterback duties for Seattle, the spread could grow in St. Louis’ favor throughout the week.
