NFL Week 4 Betting Primer

We’re now three weeks deep into the NFL season. Are you trying to dig out of the red or stay in the black? No matter where your bankroll stands heading into Week 4, we all have the same goal — to ruin the bookie’s life to the point where he’s so deeply in debt that he can’t legally declare bankruptcy, giving him no choice but to go completely off the grid and change his identity.

Or, in other words, the goal is to win big.

Last week I went over some of the basic tools you should be utilizing for handicapping games, and here’s one more — going against the public. Betting the opposite way of the public is based around the idea that the sportsbook comes out on top at a much higher percentage than the public. If they didn’t, casinos and sportsbooks wouldn’t exist.

There’s still some guesswork involved in fading the public, but your starting point should be here — our consensus picks page, which lists what percentage public money is moving in.

The NFL is incredibly volatile. Last week alone produced some very unlikely results, and this is a common occurrence from week to week. While many were burned by the Patriots failing to cover the spread or even a 7-point teaser last week, and also the Steelers and Dolphins getting upset, the sportsbook was there to take your money and they’ll gladly do it again.

Going into this week, try not to be swayed by public opinion and you might just come out on the winning side.
