SN: Packers Have Come Under Scrutiny

Green Bay Packers

Surprised Green Bay is a 2.5-point road favorite against unbeaten Carolina, which has won its last 11 straight regular-season games? Maybe you shouldn't be.

The Packers have the second-lowest odds to win the Super Bowl in back of only New England at 9/2, according to Bovada. The Panthers are 9/1 to capture the Super Bowl.

Green Bay's talent level and coaching, though, has come under scrutiny since a 29-10 road loss to Denver.

Looking at the Packers' previous three games before their Denver loss is revealing. Green Bay needed a goal line stand with 15 seconds left to hold off San Diego, 27-20. The Packers were outgained 548-370 while failing to cover a 10.5-point home spread.

Green Bay was fortunate to cover against St. Louis, too, winning, 24-10, laying 8.5. Rams quarterback Nick Foles threw four interceptions in that game, two inside the Packers' 10-yard line.

The week before the Packers could only manage 17 points against San Francisco.

Mike McCarthy helped cost Green Bay a trip to the Super Bowl last season making too many conservative coaching decisions in the NFC title game against Seattle.

Now Packers General Manager Ted Thompson may have cost his team a shot at the Super Bowl by not making a move at the trade deadline.

The Patriots have the No. 1 offense. A major reason is Rob Gronkowski, who is far and away the best tight end in the league. Green Bay's tight end is Richard Rodgers, a plodding, second-year player with decent hands but little speed.

Thompson could have upgraded this weak spot by trading a middle-round draft pick for 49ers tight end Vernon Davis. But he sat on his hands unwilling to give up one of his precious draft picks.

Thompson has repeatedly failed to do what his mentor, Hall of Fame executive Ron Wolf, did when he ran the Packers and that was pick up veterans down the stretch. Wolf's astute moves helped Green Bay reach the Super Bowl in 1996 and 1997.

Passing on Davis - still a major talent and deep threat - could keep the Packers from reaching the Super Bowl once again.
