Oakland Raiders vs New York Jets

Raiders Continue Playoff Push With Visit to New York

If the Oakland Raiders are going to make their second playoff appearance since 2002, they can’t afford to look past the 3-7 Jets on Sunday in New York. Oakland has covered five of the last seven meetings but hasn’t won at New York since 1996. The Raiders opened as 4.5-point road favorites.

Home teams have won eight of the last nine meetings between these teams, but it’s the visiting Raiders who opened as 4.5-point favorites in this one at Sportsbook. New York quickly drew early betting support, moving the line down to +3 by Monday night.

Oakland News & Notes

At 6-4, the Raiders are in position to make a surprising run to the playoffs, especially with just one of their final six opponents currently owning a record of .500 or better. But don’t expect Oakland to blow anyone away down the stretch.

All of Oakland’s victories this year have been by a single possession, including last week’s tougher-than-expected 17-10 win over the winless Bengals. The Raiders generated just 20 first downs and 386 total yards of offense, but the defense came up huge with five sacks and two forced turnovers.

It marked the third straight game in which Oakland’s 23rd-ranked D rose to the occasion with the game on the line. The Raiders clinched a Week 9 win over Detroit with a red-zone stop in the dying seconds, then intercepted Philip Rivers in the final minute of a two-point win over the Chargers.

“You have to close out games on defense if you’re going to win,” noted Oakland coach Jon Gruden. “I think we’re actually looking forward to the challenges of going out there and finishing.”

New York News & Notes

After being held to 18 points or less in seven of their first eight games, the Jets have scored 34 points in back-to-back games. What’s changed? The obvious is quarterback Sam Darnold, who missed three of New York’s first four games due to mono. But even after Darnold returned, the Jets managed just 12 first downs and 154 total yards in a 33-0 loss at home to New England in Week 6.

Both Darnold and head coach Adam Gase point to a meeting they had following a Week 10 loss at Jacksonville as the turning point for the Jets attack. New York has averaged nearly 340 yards and more than 28 points per game since the two discussed which plays best fit Darnold’s skill set in Gase’s offensive system, and Darnold threw touchdowns to four different receivers in last week’s win over Washington.

“I feel like we’ve been able to find our rhythm and it’s been really good,” Darnold told reporters. New York has gone OVER in each of its last four games, which have seen an average of 50 points scored.

Betting Pick: Jets +4.5

Nothing’s come easy this season for the Raiders, and I don’t expect this early start on the East Coast to be any different.
