Pittsburgh Has Been Playing Better With Improved Rush Attack

The Steelers improved to 2-1 SU and ATS over their last three games with a 24-17 upset win on the road over the Indianapolis Colts as 2.5-point underdogs on Monday night. Najee Harris rushed for 35 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries before leaving the game with an abdominal injury. Benny Snell Jr. played well in relief of Harris with 12 rushing attempts, 62 yards and a touchdown. Pittsburgh finished the day with 172 rushing yards.

Reports on Tuesday indicated that Harris’ injury is not serious, and he is currently listed as questionable to return against the Falcons. Pittsburgh has rushed for 158.8 yards per game over its last four games (2-2 SU, 2-2 ATS) since averaging only 87.7 rushing yards during its 2-5 SU and 3-3-1 ATS start to the season.

Atlanta Has Cooled Off Since Hot Start To Campaign

The Falcons continued to rush the ball well on Sunday in a 19-13 loss on the road to the New Orleans Saints, compiling 167 yards on 29 carries. But while Marcus Mariota was effective in the running game with 49 yards on six carries, he was far less effective as a passer, going 15-for-25 with 174 passing yards, one touchdown pass and one interception. Atlanta’s 160 rushing yards per game ranks fourth in the NFL while its 155.3 passing yards per game ranks 31st, ahead of only the Chicago Bears.

This rush-heavy attack was working earlier in the season as the Falcons came out of the gate with a 3-3 SU and 6-0 ATS record. That early success has not carried into the middle of the campaign, however, as Atlanta  is just 2-4 SU and 1-5 ATS over its last six games.

Steelers: Keys to Win

Whether Najee Harris is healthy enough to start or Benny Snell Jr. gets another healthy dose of carries, the Steelers are clearly at their best when they can take pressure off rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett with a strong running game. Doing so again against Atlanta could lead to success as a Steelers vs Falcons prediction on the road.

Falcons: Keys to Win

Pittsburgh ranks 30th in the NFL in pass defense, allowing 263.7 yards per game through the air. While Atlanta is built around its rushing attack, the Falcons will likely need Marcus Mariota to take advantage of the Steelers’ weakness against the pass to earn a win as a Steelers vs Falcons pick on Sunday.
