Betting Preview: Pittsburgh Steelers vs San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers are confident, dangerous offensively and get to face a Pittsburgh Steelers squad in Week 3 that is without Ben Roethlisberger and possibly James Conner. As 7-point home favorites, it’s hard not to envision the Niners going 3-0 for the first time since 1998.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs San Francisco 49ers (Matchup Report)

Date/Time: September 22, 4:25 p.m. ET

TV Coverage: CBS

Opening Odds: San Francisco -7 | O/U 44 (Line History)

Opening Odds Analysis

The spread opened at -1 for the 49ers, but it was clearly a placeholder until more information came in about the injured Ben Roethlisberger. Once the news dropped he was out for the season, the spread jumped to -7 for San Francisco, with the total dropping from 46.5 to 44.

Pittsburgh News & Notes

The Steelers started the season 0-2, following up a humiliating beatdown to rival New England with a disappointing 28-26 home loss to a Seattle team that was shut out in two previous games at Heinz Field.

To make matters worse, the face of the franchise, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, will have season-ending surgery on his elbow this week, thrusting backup Mason Rudolph into the spotlight to save Pittsburgh’s season.

Rudolph played well in Week 2, but Pittsburgh running back James Conner has struggled in his first two games, and was also seen favoring his knee in the Week 2 loss, while the Steelers secondary was torched again for the second straight game.

Pittsburgh is 2-6 ATS in its last eight games, and with all the moving parts around this team this week, that trend could continue to grow.

San Francisco News & Notes

What a difference a week makes. After an ugly Week 1 win, where the offense didn’t quite look in sync, the 49ers were all on the same page against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2.

Jimmy Garoppolo threw three touchdowns and the Niners ran for 259 yards in a 41-17 romp, making San Francisco 2-0 in eastern time zone games, a remarkable change from their previous stretch of 0-12 in eastern games from 2015 to 2018.

San Francisco’s win did come at a cost, as starting left tackle Joe Staley went down with a broken fibula. How big an effect this will have on the league’s third-highest scoring team through two weeks remains to be seen, but with a porous Pittsburgh defense on the opposite side of the line in Week 3, the OVER, which has hit in five of the last seven meetings between these teams, could be in play yet again.

Betting Pick: San Francisco -7

The Steelers struggle to run, don’t have their QB and can’t stop anyone on defense. The Niners are home and they CAN score. I’m taking San Francisco to cover -7.
