Alex Smith and the Chiefs are perfect through five weeks – both in the standings and for bettors – and some have crowned them kings of the NFL. Their throne will be challenged in Week 6, though, when they face a Steelers team that’s desperately trying to prove it’s still a Super Bowl contender.
Kansas City opened as a 3.5-point favorite after an impressive win over the Texans on Sunday night and that line has been moving more heavily in the direction of the Chiefs ever since. Now at +650 in NFL futures, the Chiefs look like they’re for real and they can affirm their status as one of the best in the league with a win against a team they’ve gone just 1-5 against in their last six matchups.
Coming off a five-interception day against the Jaguars, Ben Roethlisberger had another week mired in rhetoric and retirement speculation. He might have been a little off all day on Sunday but it was confusing why he was asked to throw the ball 55 times vs one of the best aerial defenses in the NFL. He’ll have a good chance to rebound against the Chiefs, though, as they’ve been allowing 248 passing yards per game in 2017.
This is shaping up to be an awesome football game but don’t get too excited. The Chiefs’ last seven games at Arrowhead Stadium against teams in the NFC North have averaged just 30 total points and Pittsburgh’s defense has been really good this year, allowing just 276.2 total yards of offense per game.
It’s likely going to take some clever play-calling from Andy Reid to beat the Steel Curtain through the air but I’d expect a heavy dosage of Kareem Hunt in the contest, with the rookie averaging 6.3 yards per carry on 97 attempts and with Pittsburgh allowing 181 yards to fellow rookie Leonard Fournette last week.
