NFL Recap: Underdogs dominate Week 1

Anytime underdogs go 10-3 ATS, you can safely assume the betting public took a beating and the sportsbooks did pretty well.

That was certainly the case Sunday as Week 1 of the NFL betting season kicked into full gear, with some reports out of Las Vegas stating it was their biggest regular-season day of profits ever.

After Seattle covered easily as chalk on Thursday, favorites fell fast and furious on Sunday, with only San Francisco (-5 at Dallas), Philly (who narrowly avoided the upset avalanche by scoring 34 points in the second half against the Jags), and Houston (-3 at home to the Redskins) covering.

The Dolphins pummelling the Patriots with a second-half assault, the Broncos failing to cover after racing to a 24-0 lead, and the Steelers and Saints failing were all big wins for the book.

"We saw some growth at the start of the NFL season, Sunday was especially strong," said Kevin Bradley of Bovada.lv.

"Considering we needed the underdog to cover in all the games except Minnesota, and underdogs were 10-3 ATS, we had a big day."

Will the betting public heed this warning and back the underdogs in the Monday Night Football doubleheader? Not according to the betting consensus data here at OddsShark.

The Lions are being backed by 63 percent of the public (-6.5 at home to the Giants). But the Chargers are the pick of about 57 percent as they are +2.5 at Arizona.

Online sportsbook Bovada had the best Chargers dog line at press time at +3. They also offered the Giants at +7, which was the best line early Monday for underdog bettors.
