  • First place in the NFC North is on the line Sunday as the surprising Tampa Bay Buccaneers visit the Drew Brees-less Saints. New Orleans has won both of its games since losing its superstar QB to injury, but Tampa should be full of confidence following an upset of the defending conference champion Rams.

    Sportsbook Odds Analysis

    Whether it’s in reaction to Tampa Bay’s upset win last week in LA or the Saints’ offensive struggles without Brees, early money has been on the underdog Bucs. Tampa Bay opened as a 5.5-point road pup but was down to +4.5 by Monday evening at Sportsbook.

    Don’t look now, but these Buccaneers are rapidly showing signs of improvement under first-year coach Bruce Arians. If it weren’t for a missed chip-shot field goal at the gun two weeks ago against the Giants, Tampa Bay would be 3-1 and tied with New Orleans atop the NFC North.

    Jameis Winston’s 1,167 passing yards through four games has been a nice surprise, but the biggest key to the Bucs’ early success might be their improved run defense. In fact, Tampa’s stop unit ranks first in the entire NFL against the rush, allowing a paltry 59.2 yards per game.

    Last week, they limited Todd Gurley and the Rams to 28 rushing yards and 2.5 yards per carry. That ability to ground the ground attack could come in handy against a New Orleans team that has become reliant on the run in Brees’ absence, handing the ball off 27 times in last week’s upset of the Cowboys.

    The Saints deserve a lot of credit for winning both of their games since Brees suffered a thumb injury in Week 2. But is the way they’re winning games sustainable? The Saints were outgained 514-165 in a 33-27 win at Seattle, then failed to score a touchdown despite four trips to the red zone last week against Dallas.

    In two starts in place of Brees, Teddy Bridgewater has thrown for 370 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. “I don’t care about the numbers,” Bridgewater said after last week’s win. “My job right now is just to help this team win football games.”

    Like Tampa Bay, the Saints have dialed up the run defense to key their recent success, allowing just 153 rushing yards in their last two wins. The defensive front also got a boost last week with the return of tackle Sheldon Rankins from an Achilles tendon injury.

    Betting Pick: UNDER 47.5

    There’s not much flash and dash from the Saints offense right now, and neither team is giving up much on the ground. I like the UNDER to cash for the 16th time in the last 22 meetings between these division rivals.
