Bucs Visit Eagles As Big Favorites On TNF

Tom Brady's Buccaneers are favorites in the Tampa Bay vs Philadelphia odds or Week 6.

Prime time hasn’t been kind to the Buccaneers (4-1 SU, 2-3 ATS), who have not covered the spread in seven straight games under the lights. Tampa Bay might have a tough time breaking that streak as a touchdown favorite over the Eagles (2-3, 2-3), who are 5-2 ATS in their last seven as a home underdog.

Opening Odds Analysis

Tampa Bay was quickly bet up to a 7-point road favorite, but it seems unlikely that the point spread will move across the key number to -7.5. Philly has been a home underdog of more than a touchdown just eight times since 1995, going 7-1 ATS in those contests.

Tampa Bay News & Notes

Despite injuring the thumb on his throwing hand in the opening half last week against Miami, Tom Brady went on to throw for more than 400 yards and five touchdowns, the first time he’s done both in a game in his illustrious career. Brady sported a bandage on the thumb in a post-game press conference, but coach Bruce Arians told reporters he doesn’t expect the injury to be an issue.

How well the rest of Brady’s body recovers on a short week could be something to monitor, however. Don’t forget one of the Bucs’ worst performances last season came on Thursday Night Football when they scored just 19 points in a loss in Chicago. Tampa Bay has not covered any of its last seven prime-time games, including the season opener against Dallas.

If you’re looking for a reliable wide receiver to start in your fantasy lineup, you can’t go wrong with any of the Bucs’ trio of Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Antonio Brown. Evans and Brown both caught a pair of touchdown passes and had more than 100 yards against the Dolphins, and all three are on pace for 1,000-yard campaigns and double-digit touchdown totals.

Philadelphia News & Notes

The Eagles defense enjoyed a bounce-back performance last week in Carolina, forcing three turnovers and recording three sacks to key a 21-18 victory over the Panthers. Philadelphia allowed just 267 total yards, looking a lot more like the unit that has held opponents to 18 points or less in three of its five games than the one that was torched for 83 points and 851 yards combined in losses to Dallas and Kansas City. On the season, the Eagles rank third in the NFL against the pass, allowing 194.8 yards per game.

The strong defensive effort bought time for quarterback Jalen Hurts and the offense, which shook off an ugly first half to record a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns. Hurts ran for both majors and continues to be the Eagles’ top running threat, leading the team with 256 yards on 43 carries.

Don’t be surprised if we see Philly’s defense lead the way once again on a short week, especially at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles have gone UNDER the total in 13 of their last 17 home games, and they have also gone UNDER in seven of their last eight prime-time contests.

How Tampa Bay Will Cover

Both Brady and the Bucs will need to perform a lot better on short rest than they have recently. However, if Tampa Bay can run the ball effectively and not give the Eagles any short fields with turnovers, the Buccaneers are clearly the superior squad and should win by at least a touchdown.

How Philadelphia Will Cover

It’s hard to completely shut down this Buccaneers attack, but Philadelphia’s stellar pass defense should at least contain it enough for the Eagles to stay in the game throughout. Hurts will also need to make some plays through the air since Philly probably won’t have much success running the ball against Tampa Bay’s defensive front.
