Underdogs Win Again in Week 7 NFL

After barking loudly for three straight weeks, underdogs took a week off from yapping last week, going only 6-7-1 ATS.

But while bettors may have taken that as a sign that favorites were getting their groove back, underdogs showed us Sunday that they still plan to make lots of noise, going 8-5 ATS.

There were only two double-digit dogs in Week 7 and Cleveland won outright in New Orleans (+12.5) and the Bills nearly won in Baltimore (losing 37-34 as 12.5-point underdogs). There were five outright upsets, making huge profits for NFL moneyline bettors who picked those teams.

The five favorites that won and covered were Atlanta (-3.5) over Cincinnati, Tennessee (-3.0) over Philadelphia, Kansas City (-9.0) over Jacksonville, Seattle (-6.5) over Arizona, and Green Bay (-3.0) over Minnesota. Other than that, it was all underdogs Sunday and the Giants will try to continue the trend in Monday Night Football odds tonight. Baltimore needed overtime to take care of Buffalo, eventually coming away with a victory for themselves and a loss for those betting on them. It was the fifth straight game that Buffalo has given up at least 34 points, but their offense kept it close in this one against a usually sound Baltimore defense.

Cleveland on the other hand didn’t just cover the spread, they earned the outright upset. Fueled by four interceptions (two returned for touchdowns), Cleveland beat New Orleans 30-17 in the NFL’s biggest outright upset of the year so far. Bettors that took a shot on the moneyline were rewarded very handsomely. The game went over its total of 44 points.

Carolina earned its first win of the season as a 3-point underdog at home against San Francisco. Many believed that the 49ers had rejuvenated their season with a win last week against Oakland and a likely win this week in Carolina, but the Panthers pulled off the upset, leaving Buffalo as the only remaining winless team in the NFL.

As for Oakland, they bounced back from last week’s loss to San Francisco in a huge way Sunday. Closing as a 7-point underdog in Denver, the Raiders jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game and never looked back, cruising to a stunning 59-14 win.

The 73 points scored in that game was one of three 70+ point games Sunday as offense reigned supreme, leading to an Over/Under record of 9-4-0 for the OVER on the day. The other two games that reached 70 points were Baltimore’s 37-34 overtime win over Buffalo and Atlanta’s 39-32 win and cover at home over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Only three games failed to go over 40 points of scoring, and all three stayed UNDER their totals; Seattle’s 22-10 win and cover over Arizona (posted total of 40.5), Tampa Bay’s 18-17 SU win but ATS loss as a 3-point favorite over St. Louis (posted total of 39), and Washington’s 17-14 upset win over Chicago (posted total of 40).
