Week 3: Preseason NFL Trends

We bet against the Kansas City Chiefs in both of their preseason games so far in August and we’ll be doing the same in Weeks 3 and 4.

Regardless of what the coaches say about their strategy, regardless of whether their starters are playing one set of downs or a full half, and regardless of what the pointspread says.

Because betting against the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL preseason is about the closest thing you can get to a lock over the past seven years.

In the span of 27 games, the once-proud Chiefs have covered the spread three times. As in less than four and just one more than two. In seven seasons. [ Get a generous bonus, the best NFL underdog lines, and the best customer service in the business when you visit Sportsbook today ]

Let’s illustrate this run of futility another way – the Chiefs are 3-23-1 ATS dating back to August of 2004. True to form, they lost and failed to cover twice already this August and have looked pretty bad in the process. Imagine betting against a team 27 times and winning 23 times? That’s been the Chiefs' situation.

All those Raiders fans who hate the Chiefs have been betting against them and gleefully collecting ATS win after ATS win. Only once since 2008 has the ‘Fade the Chiefs System’ failed and that was a heartbreaking win at Chicago (24-20 on Aug. 7, 2008). The Chiefs were a 3-point road underdog and inexplicably won and covered.

So while some avoid the NFL preseason betting scene like the plague, crowing that the games don’t matter and how can you handicap exhibition games, others take the money and run – straight to the bank. By the time Week 1 of the regular season arrives, they have already padded their bankrolls.

Are there other solid trends for this week’s games?

- The Giants and Jets have played UNDER the total in 8 of their past 10 meetings. This is a tricky one, with both teams playing at ‘home.’ But the UNDER has been reliable. Be wary however – the past two seasons, the games have gone OVER.

- Carolina has played 8 straight UNDERs with their Week 1 and 2 UNDER plays. The Panthers are also 2-8 ATS in the past 10 preseason games overall.

- Detroit is 6-1 ATS in its past 7 preseason matches

- Green Bay has played OVER the total  13 times in the past 15 preseason games

- Miami is 10-2-1 ATS in the past 13 preseason games
