Will the Philadelphia Eagles Move On from Nick Foles in the Offseason?

Nick Foles Odds for 2019 Season January 7, 2019

Stop me if you’ve heard this before but Nick Foles is winning NFL playoff games again. The seventh-year quarterback has led the Philadelphia Eagles to the divisional round of the NFL playoffs, which means his days in Philly may be numbered according to oddsmakers.

Online sportsbook Bovada has released odds on where Nick Foles will play at the start of the 2019 NFL season, with any other team as massive chalk at -1200 and the Eagles coming back at +600.

Let’s break down these odds for what will happen with Nasty Nick:

Why Foles Stays With The Eagles

The two main reasons why the Eagles brass would want to keep Nick Foles are simple – Carson Wentz hasn’t proven he can play a full season and Foles seems to play his best when the lights are brightest. Wentz has now missed 12 games since the start of last season (eight regular-season games and four playoff games) and at the game’s most important position, health and availability is imperative to a team’s overall success.

The Eagles are 7-0 SU in The last seven elimination games with Nick Foles as their quarterback.

The other factor is that Foles is big-time when his back is against the wall. Foles has led the Eagles to a 7-0 SU record in their last seven elimination games dating back to last season with 14 touchdowns, six interceptions and a 72.9 completion percentage. Part of the mystique last year during the Eagles’ Super Bowl run was attributed to being able to play at home but Foles has balled out in two road games against what was thought to be superior competition in the Rams and Bears over the last four weeks.

At +600, now would be the time to hammer this prop because if the Eagles go into New Orleans and shock the Saints, I don’t know how Philadelphia’s front office can say with a straight face that it would get rid of the most successful quarterback in the history of the franchise. Especially in favor of a quarterback like Wentz, who can’t seem to stay healthy and will command a huge payday after the final season of his contract.

Why the Eagles Move On From Nick Foles

I think I’ve made a pretty good case for why the Eagles should keep Foles but they could get a huge return for him in the trade market. The Eagles were offered a second-rounder prior to the start of the season for Foles but they wisely declined. If he keeps up this pace, there could be a handful of suitors lining up to give Philly a first-round pick or better.

The other reason simply is the money. Philly would likely have to franchise-tag him in order to keep him or take him up on his $20-million option for the second year of his contract. That could prove to be problematic since the Eagles have needs elsewhere on the roster. They have the least amount of cap space going into next season and paying two quarterbacks top money is typically a death sentence to a team’s cap.

I know the odds favor Foles moving on from the City of Brotherly Love but if he pulls off another miracle in New Orleans in the divisional game, the Eagles will have a tough choice to make.

Do you think the Eagles keep Foles for next season or do they move on from the only quarterback to ever lead them to a Super Bowl championship? Have your say in the comments.
