Will Kaepernick Play In The CFL?

Colin Kaepernick has not played a down of professional football since January 1, 2016. Since that game, Kaepernick has become one of the biggest stories in all of professional sports, as the six-foot-four, 230-pound athletic quarterback has been unable to find employment in the NFL.

Though that is unlikely to change any time soon – or possibly ever – there is still hope that the former San Francisco 49ers signal-caller plays professional football again. The Montreal Alouettes of the CFL have reportedly shown interest in Kaepernick.

The Als placed Kaepernick on their negotiation list in August, giving them the exclusive rights to negotiate with the QB in the CFL.

This likely won’t come to mean anything any time soon but the Als have been in a desperate search for a quarterback ever since legendary Anthony Calvillo retired in 2013. Since the beginning of the 2014 CFL season, 15 different quarterbacks have taken snaps for the Alouettes – including Troy Smith, Rakeem Cato and Vernon Adams Jr.

At this point in the season, the Alouettes are unlikely to bring in another new quarterback with only two games left. However, they would be dumb to ignore Kaepernick and not do their due diligence on his willingness to come aboard for the 2018 season, as his skill set would mesh perfectly with the wide-open Canadian style of football.

Aside from his fit in the style of play, CFL front office members seemingly would have no problem whatsoever bringing in Kaepernick. “I would take Kap in a heartbeat,” an anonymous CFL scouting director told Bleacher Report.

It seems as though the ball is in Kaepernick’s court at this juncture. Any team in the CFL would be lucky to have the signal-caller but he will need to take their calls and be willing to move north of the border.

Whether he does play in the CFL or not, one thing is for sure – Kaepernick is going to be a story for a long time to come.
