Windy City Quarterback Carousel: Who’s Going to Start for the Bears in 2017?

There was a point when the Chicago Bears were one of the most feared franchises in the NFL, but those days are in the past now. Mired in a 3-10 season, the Bears are well on their way to missing the playoffs for the ninth time in 10 years and pessimism is starting to build up quickly in the Windy City.

Online sportsbook Bovada is offering odds on which man will be under center in Chicago when the 2017 NFL season gets underway, with Matt Barkley the favorite at +150. Jay Cutler (+200), Brian Hoyer (+500) and the “Any other quarterback” option (+150) are also on the board.

It appears that the Bears and Cutler, their longtime signal-caller, are set to mutually part ways in the offseason. The guaranteed money in Cutler’s pricey contract has run out, which means the team can release him without facing any repercussions.

Cutler is the Bears’ all-time leader in passing yards, but he’s thrown an ugly 146 interceptions over his career. The veteran has struggled to stay healthy in recent years, and he managed to play in only five games in 2016. Cutler suffered a torn labrum in Week 11 against the Giants and was subsequently shut down for the remainder of the campaign.

Barkley has done an admirable job filling the void, as the Bears are 1-2 in his starts but came from behind to beat San Francisco and were end-of-game dropped passes away from winning against Tennessee and tying or defeating Detroit. Barkley is only 26, but there are far too many variables in play to declare him the quarterback of the future in Chi-Town at this point.

Then again, it’s anyone’s guess what’s going to happen right now. The quarterbacks in this year’s draft class are weaker than usual, and the Bears might not be able to find a better alternative than what they already have. Hoyer outplayed Cutler before he got hurt, but the club will likely lose the journeyman to free agency.
