Blues Sharks Playoff Odds

In what looks to be a bit of a mismatch on paper the St. Louis Blues, the two seed in the Western Conference, skate with the seventh-seeded San Jose Sharks in a first-round NHL playoff series beginning Thursday.

But bettor beware - the Sharks are a veteran team capable of the upset here.

As of Tuesday afternoon WilliamHill.com is listing St. Louis as a -160 favorite for Thursday's series opener (7:30 pm Eastern, CNBC, TSN), with San Jose getting +140. And the 'over/under' sits at five (O +105/U -125).

On the NHL futures boards at Bovada the Blues are listed at -160 to win this series, with the Sharks getting +140 as the underdogs. St. Louis is also being offered at 3/1 to win the Western Conference and 8/1 to win the Stanley Cup, while San Jose is listed at 10/1 to win the West and 20/1 to win the Cup.

St. Louis rallied from a 7-8 start (and a change at head coach) this season to finish at 49-22-11, winning the Central Division and claiming the two seed in the West. The Blues, with probably the best two-headed goalie situation in the league in Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliot, led the league in goals against at 1.89 per game.

And in controlling the puck they also led the league by allowing the fewest shots on goal.

Meanwhile San Jose, in shooting for its third-straight trip to the conference finals, placed second in the Pacific Division, just missing out on the three seed by finishing one point behind first-place Phoenix. And the Sharks finished well, winning seven of their last nine games.

Looking at the head-to-head action in this series, though, it appears the Sharks might be in trouble. St. Louis swept four games from San Jose during the regular season, outscoring the Sharks 11-3. Three of those four games played 'under' the totals.

St. Louis, which will host Games 1 and 2 and, if necessary, Game 7, went a sparkling 30-6-5 at home this season, while San Jose went 17-177 on the road. Conversely, the Sharks went 26-12-3 at home while the Blues went 19-16-6 on the road.

With that great defense doing its thing the Blues went a lopsided 21-43 on the 'over/unders' this season.
