Canada, Russia Renew Hockey Rivalry Saturday

The semifinals are now set for the World Cup of Hockey and the first game pits the undefeated Canadians against the streaking Russians. Team Canada looks like the typical powerhouse we’ve come to expect but Team Russia is playing with years of heartache on their shoulders.

  • This is the first game Canada has played with a total lower than 6.
  • Canada has outshot Russia 130-75 so far this tournament.
  • Artemi Panarin recorded a goal and an assist when these two met in pre-tournament action.

Canada has been largely untouchable this tournament, as they have outscored their opposition 14-3 in three round-robin games. It’s simply been an offensive onslaught for the Canadians, as they have averaged 43.4 shots per game. The Canadians also boast arguably the best goalie in the world in Carey Price, with No. 31 posting a .968 save percentage and a 1.00 GAA in two starts.

Russia has become accustomed to embarrassing losses in international hockey events. A 7-3 beatdown at the hands of Canada in the 2010 Winter Olympics, a 3-1 quarterfinals loss to Finland in the 2014 Olympics and yet another hard-to-watch loss to Canada in the 2015 world championships. However, since a tough first outing that saw them lose to Sweden, Russia has looked like a far superior squad while outscoring opponents 7-3.

It has been quite a long time since Russia won an international hockey tournament that saw all NHL players eligible to play. In fact, the last time the nation won a tourney in this spot was the 1981 Canada Cup – while they were still the Soviet Union.
