Canucks Open As 2012 Stanley Cup Faves

They didn’t get the job done in Game 7, losing the Stanley Cup to Boston, but oddsmakers have faith in them to take another serious run in 2012.

Just moments after Boston raised the Cup, and just moments after drunken idiots tore half of downtown Vancouver apart, oddsmakers at Bovada installed the Vancouver Canucks as 5/1 favorites to win in 2012.

The Bruins, with young talent and savvy, hard-working veterans, are neck and neck with Washington as the second pick at 8/1 odds.

The Pennsylvania teams – Pittsburgh and Philly – are next at 9/1, but any positive news from those cities could send their odds way down. Why? Philadelphia was a goalie away from playing for the Cup this season, and they have traded for the rights to Phoenix stud Ilya Bryzgalov. If he signs, the Flyers will move way up the Stanley Cup future odds list.

Ditto in Pittsburgh, where a knee injury to Evgeni Malkin and lingering concussion symptoms suffered by Sidney Crosby leave plenty of room for the Penguins to surge (if and when both are cleared to play).

Of note, the as-yet-unnamed Winnipeg franchise (freshly transplanted from Atlanta) is at 80/1 odds, just behind the long-suffering Leafs at 60/1.

Three teams flush with young talent and ready to move up next season are the Tampa Bay Lightning (12/1 after a stellar playoff run), Chicago (15/1), and Los Angeles at 16/1.
