Hitting a bump in the road last night, the Blackhawks dropped their first point of the season in an overtime loss to the Leafs. Chicago held a 3-1 lead late in the third period of the contest but was heavily outshot (43-21) and goaltender Anton Forsberg could not withstand the offensive barrage. He’ll give way to Corey Crawford (.968 save percentage) this evening when the ’Hawks take on the Habs in their second game in as many nights.
Averaging six goals per game so far, the Blackhawks offense looks as lethal as ever and to the Canadiens, it probably looks insurmountable. Montreal has just three total goals after three games – for the lowest average in the NHL – and it appears as if the worries about where the Habs’ scoring would come from this season were warranted.
All that said, the ’Hawks are not an unbeatable team this year and the Canadiens still have Carey Price. Montreal’s lumbering blue line should clog up Chicago’s attack and limit opportunities. Given how his forwards have been playing, Claude Julien will want to play this one as close to the chest as possible.
Don’t expect the same high-flying Blackhawks team we’ve seen through three games. Monitor the total here and target the UNDER if you see a 5.5.
