Vegas Favored to Close Out Colorado in West Division Final

Marc-Andre Fleury and the Vegas Golden Knights are favored in NHL betting odds to top the Colorado Avalanche and advance to the Stanley Cup semifinals.

The Colorado Avalanche have gone from being in charge to being in trouble in their second-round Stanley Cup playoff series with Vegas as the Golden Knights host Game 6 on Thursday night. Vegas (47-17-4 SU, 33-33-2 O/U) has reeled off three straight victories – including an overtime stunner in Denver on Tuesday – to put the once-favored Avalanche (45-15-5 SU, 32-32-1 O/U) on the brink of elimination.

Opening Odds Analysis

Vegas opened as a -140 favorite, but the majority of sportsbooks have set the line at -135. The total is firm at 5.5, with the OVER between +100 and +105 and the UNDER ranging from -115 to -125.

Colorado News & Notes

While the Avalanche were more competitive Tuesday than they had been in a dreadful Game 4 effort, their Game 5 loss was no less damaging given that they squandered a 2-0 third-period lead and did well to limit the Golden Knights’ scoring chances throughout. And trends are not on their side: the team that loses Game 5 in a series tied 2-2 goes on to advance just 21.2 percent of the time.

From a betting standpoint, it will be interesting to see what head coach Jared Bednar does with his top two lines after he opted to shake things up in Game 5. Bednar dropped Gabriel Landeskog to the second unit and moved Brandon Saad to the top line alongside Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen, with Saad going on to score late in the opening period.

Vegas News & Notes

The Avalanche are learning first-hand just how frustrating it can be to face a Golden Knights roster that has no fear when it comes to getting in front of the puck. Vegas led the NHL in blocked shots during the season (843) and is the only team in the postseason with more than 200 shot blocks to date (215); the Golden Knights racked up 26 blocked shots in the Game 5 victory.

It also helps to have a future Hall of Fame netminder as your last line of defense – and Marc-Andre Fleury has been sensational so far this postseason, posting a 1.81 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage. He’s definitely worth a look on the Conn Smythe Trophy futures board if you can find a sportsbook that has these odds available.

Betting Pick: Vegas (-135)

Colorado is scrambling right now, while the Golden Knights have been terrific at getting bodies in front of shot attempts and have the superior goaltender at the moment.
