Without Top Line Production, The Stars Won’t Shine In Dallas

Jamie Benn's Stars are favored in the Los Angeles vs Dallas Odds - Oct. 22.

The 2021 season for the Dallas Stars included injuries to key players, ice storms that canceled games and a COVID-19 outbreak that caused scheduling chaos. Ultimately what 2021 didn’t include was a trip to the playoffs. If Dallas wants to find its way into the playoff conversation this year, then taking two points from teams like the L.A. Kings, who are not expected to win a lot of hockey games, will only increase its odds.

  • Opening Odds: Dallas -150 | O/U 5.5 (Line History)
  • Kings vs Stars (Matchup Report)

Opening Odds Analysis

The home team Stars opened as -150 favorites for this game and the line remains there currently. The Kings split a pair of games at home and are coming off a 2-1 loss on the road in Nashville, Tuesday night.

The total opened at 5.5 and that number is holding, but with enough juice on the UNDER that the total could get down to 5 at some sportsbooks before the drop of the puck.

Los Angeles News & Notes

In their first game of the season, the Kings exploded for six goals against a very good Vegas team. In their two starts since opening night, L.A. has combined to score three goals, dropping decisions to Minnesota and Nashville.

Drew Doughty won a Norris Trophy as the league's best defenceman in 2016. At the beginning of this season, Doughty’s odds to win his second Norris were +3500. The 31-year-old currently leads all NHL defensemen in scoring with seven points in three games.

Anze Kopitar is tied for second in NHL scoring with eight points in only three games this year. What is even more impressive for the Kings centerman is that L.A. has only scored 9 goals as a team and Kopitar has been involved in eight of them.

Dallas News and Notes

The Stars' top line of Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin and Alexander Radulov all have a history of being able to produce points. However, the average age for those three players is 32-years-old, with only Seguin (29) under the age of 30. If there was a concern about the Dallas team this year, it would be their ability to score goals. Benn, Seguin and Radulov have combined to score 0 goals in the Stars' first four games.

Dallas will be missing two key players against L.A tonight. The offensively gifted John Klingberg will not dress. Klingberg had 36 points in 53 games last year. Jason Robertson, who managed 46 points as a rookie last season is also injured and will not dress.

How Los Angeles Will Win

The Kings have nine goals in three games. Anze Kopitar has been involved in eight of those nine goals. The Kings need secondary scoring options to step up. If L.A. can get goals from their second or third lines they become a much tougher team to defend and will have a real chance to leave Dallas with two road points.

How Dallas Will Win

Dallas has zero goal production from their top line in four games. Although the Stars have more depth up front than the Kings, no team is deep enough to win a lot of hockey games if their top line isn’t producing. If Benn, Seguin and Radulov can start clicking, whether at 5-on-5 or on the power play, Dallas is good enough defensively to earn two points at home.
